Which technique do you find suitable for recording guitars

Post by Whatnow2012 »

in your own current situation using mics or going direct today it is more affordable than ever to get good quality with either approach as there are quality DAWs for cheap or free and impulses lots of information on the internet for home recordists and Decent mic interfaces that are affordable and aimed at the home recordist or prosumer and affordable hardware multi-fx units have come a long way in recent years

so I ask to you not which you think is better overall but in your current situation what is the approach that suits you right now and why do you prefer to mic the amp or to use direct for your recordings as far as myself in the Den i've gotten very nice results For rock with mics so it doesn't sound like A Scum but no longer have Nice amp I had to sell it to fix my car but I still have my sm57 and e906 just in case but I have recently began experimenting with using cab impulses with the line 6 amp direct and am very pleased with the results and after being a naysayer for years aknowledge that direct in can make excellent sounds and the techniques have their own learning curve almost like micing

however I have a situation where i can play loudly i just don't have an amp worth micing but when I do I will like to experiment with layering micd and direct sounds because direct in sounds are very up front and clear but sometimes miss the ambiense of the micing sound and would like to mix them together for a Big sound so which approach do you prefer for your current situation

I do both...just depends on whats happening at my house. If my wife or baby are asleep, its direct. If no ones home, Ill mic. I can get pretty good sounds using both methods, but I prefer micing. Its more fun and I generally like miced tones better.

I've yet to actually hear a amp sim that I would consider to sound good, and I've played tons. My mark IVs, Mark IIIs, TSL, and JVM all had recording outs, plus I've had a line 6 pocket pod, and the amp sims in logic. They all sound like dog shit compared to a miced amp IMO.
My collection:

Mesa (Mark IV long and short head, Mark III red and blue stripe, Dual Rec 2 channel Rev G and Tremoverb)

Marshall (2203x, 2203KK, DSL50, JVM410)

Peavey (Butcher, VTM 120, Ultra 120, 6505)

Odd balls (Splawn Quickrod and EVH 5150III)
