Getting a finish like this with a wipe-on stain?

Post by Devin »

I just recently ordered a basswood body from Warmoth and would like to finish it as easily as possible - preferably some sort of wipe-on oil or stain.

I have a Warwick bass with a black stain that I absolutely LOVE - could someone suggest a product that could get me results in the same ballpark as this finish? I know the basswood won't have anywhere NEAR the prominent grain of the ash-bodied Warwick (or any particularly visible grain at all, even) but I love the shade and smooth feel of this finish. It almost feels waxy in a way.

Check out these pics of the Warwick's finish for reference:

Basswood dents by just looking at it. And the softness also means it takes stains terrible and very uneven.. If you apply a lot of coats eventually you'll get full coverage with the stain, but unless you protect it with many coats of a good poly finish, that thing wont last too long.. And even then, most store bought finishes like Minwax are pretty weak.. Maybe go with Tru-oil and wipe on like 10 coats, but it'll still most likely dent real easy

I know it's soft.....this is gonna be a straight up no frills shred machine, so I'm not really concerned at all about keeping it looking pristine. I've just never done this before and need some guidance

So to get a black stain like that, I can just get something like this http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/200552 ... 20-ml.aspx

and mix it with some tru-oil?

lol

That link jjust sent me to the homepage.. You can try and use Minwax ebony stain and just keep applying coats.. But the dry times are long, so expect to take 2 weeks to apply multiple coats of stain, and then finish on top with Tru-oil. Don't mix it in the stain, although technically you can, But most likely the drying agents aren't the same and the finish will end up uneven color and prolly bubbles..

Question - after i've stained the shit out of it with the Minwax, how many coats of TruOil should I put over it? 10 or so?

6 to 12 coats of Tru Oil applied with a coffee filter, rubbing with 00 steel wool after every 2nd or 3rd application. Tape up your pickups.
