Ok keeping with the metallica thread, rate your favorite to least favorite megadave albums.
1-Peace sells This was maves answer to metallica. He put out a great album with some amazing songs. Im not a fan of maves vocals, I mean who the hell actually likes his vocals but this is one of those albums where you just get into the songs and his vox aren't a factor. The first four songs are fucking amazing. Its my personal favorite but obviously RIP is the real #1.
2-RIP marty friedman redefined metal lead guitar on this album. Amazing riffs, amazing leads and even maves vox are tolerable to a point. A legendary album.
3-So far so good Love the guitar tone on this album and probably his best riffs pre RIP.
4-United Abomination I don't know hy I love this album so much. I really like almost all the songs and his sense of melody both in vox and in the guitar work. Nobody else on earth loves this album, idk why its hard to explain but I just get this album in a big way.
5-Countdown here is an album I have been on the fence about for the last 20 years. Sometimes I relly love the tracks other times I think they are way too soft and wimpy sounding. When I love it, its one of my favorite probably up there with so far so good, when I don't like it its not even on my radar. It is a hit or miss album with me but man there are some really great tracks on this album.
6-Killing is my business this was maves first actual album after metallica and he sounds pissed off as all hell. Not a huge fan of the songs but its kind of classic in a lot of ways. Really great riffs that probably could have been developed better imo.
7-Youthinasia This album had some really bright moment and some really bad ones. haven't heard it in years I barely remember anything on here which is never a good thing.
8-cryptic writing I guess this is when mave jumped the shark. I actually like Trust I think its probably one of his top 5 songs.
9-Risk MEH its ok, I just never gelled with it.
10-The system has failed geez I bought this when it came out I don't even remember one track on it. I had to youtube a few of these songs just to refresh my memory.
11-endgame, super collider, 13....it doesn't even matter after this point. These are all piece of shit records. Chirs Broderick ruined this band imo. idk the guy is su ch an amazing player and now the music is so uninspired and shit. mave is a complete shell of his former self when it comes to writing. I cant express enough how awful these albums are. Endgame was such a huge letdown but its the best out of the other ones for sure.

Re: Rate the entire Megadeth catalogue im this thread
Maves tone was always a little less appealing to me than the other big four tones, but I still dug Megedeth a lot in the early years.
1. So Far, So Good . . . So What. Classic tunes, killer riffs.
2. Peace Sells. Really close to a tie with So Far. Really great writing and terrific songs.
3. RIP. I freakin' loved this album. Great songs, fairly complex riffin' that was still catchy as all hell.
4. Killing is my Business. Angry pissed off Mave doing angry pissed off songs about angry pissed off things. Mechanix is like The Four Horsmen on angel dust.
The rest just sort of turn into a jumble for me. I mean, I can listen to them, and they don't anger me or make me hate them, but they don't make me feel anything either. Just meh.

Re: Rate the entire Megadeth catalogue im this thread
Glad to see some Peace Sells love up in here. Every RIP fanboi that can't seem to acknowledge the greatness of what came before always makes me shake my head.
1. Peace Sells. AWESOME f**king record. Start to finish. So much venom, anger and mosh inducing riffs. Early Megadeth has a ton of specific headbanging grooves that no other band has ever succeeded at integrating into their own sound imo. Talk sh*t about Dave's voice all you want but on the early stuff, his delivery was perfect blend of punk sneer and metallic aggression.
The rest (up to RIP) for me is a tie. Production values on SFSGSW and KIB hinder it to a degree but the songwriting is so off the hook on both of those that I view them on equal footing. I LOVE RIP but I almost rank it lower because everyone is so busy ignoring Chris Poland and swinging from Marty Friedman's nuts.
Post RIP, I dig songs here and there. Youthanasia and CTE are great records if it wasn't Megadeth. Not enough thrash or anger. Probably the peak of their melodic songwriting abilities though and definitely their 2-part answer to the Black album imo. After that, I like The System Has Failed. Primarily due to the presence of Chris Poland.

^Also, Dave hate has definitely hindered their career; especially in the age of the internet. Combine that with the lack of quality of output and they will, as always, be in other band's shadows. Even if I don't necessarily agree with that.

Hell yes.
Chris Poland is a big part of why I like Peace Sells best. Really cool style of playing.
After that, I would say SFSGSW, and then toss up for RIP and CTE as 3 and 4 (I dig that RIP is a riff festival, but I like the songs on Countdown more, Foreclosure of a Dream in one in particular that just kills and really stands out in my mind)
After that, I kind of stopped paying attention until The System Has Failed, which brought me back

Re: Rate the entire Megadeth catalogue im this thread
Killing is my business-loved the aggression and coked upand drunk Dave.. Dude was seriously pissed at this time.. Some songs rule, like Last rites/ loved to death, killing is my business, skull beneath the skin, and Chosen Ones.. Oh yeah, Looking down the cross.. These Boots was ridiculous, Rattlehead was certainly fast for the time but i never liked it, and i never like Mechanix. That opening riff needs to be slower like Metallica did it.. The speed just sounds weak.. Production obviously was super raw. I never heard the remastered version..
Peace Sells- great album overall, but i don't put it as high as others might. Wake up Dead and The Conjuring are of my favorite Megamave songs. The title track is killer.. Again, songs like Devils Island And My last Words never blew me away.. Black Friday has since awesome riffing early in the song, but kinda goes a little South as it wears on. Also again, the cover song I ain't superstitious sucks but not as bad as these boots..
So far So Good So what.. my first album bought of Megadeth.. Through out my youth i used to say it was the best Megadeth album! Like most Megadeth albums it starts off with a great song.. into the lungs of hell/Set the World afire, 502, liar and Hook in Mouth are great.. In my darkest hour is so fucking lame, i never understood why people i knew said it ruled.. Overall, solids album but like most Megadeth albums its never good from frontb to back.
Rust in Peace- for sure their best.. Holy Wars the punishment is due is Dave's finest moment as a song writer. Hangar 18, besides all the solos, is the weakest song.. But the solos do rule, so its still great.. Take no Prisoners is definitely in my top 3-4 Favorite megadeth tubes.. Five Magics is sick.. Poison was the cure is cool.. Though, I'm glad its a short one, cause if it was longer i wouldn't care for it much.. Lucretia is another well written song.. Which brings me to Tornado of Souls. Despite my band in high school covering and everyone loving it, its the worst song on the record. . Which brings me to that time ToS from hcaf didn't believe me when i said i was playing That solo by 15yo.. So i relearned that bitch in a day, some 17 years since i last played and shut him up! Lol
Countdown- was the end of the road for me.. They broke their penchant for starting out strong by putting the stupid, lame Skin O my teeth first.. Hate that song. . Symphonies is ok, but nothing special. Architect of Aggression is a good song. Foreclosure is boring.. Sweating moments has its moments musically, but i really don't like the vocal bs he did on it. This was your life is cool.. can't remember what was next. High Speed Dirt is a fun tune.. psychotron and Captive honour are both good as well. And another tune that seems universally liked, ashes in mouth, leaves me saying "meh".. playing is good, drums are good, but what comes out of the speakers does nothing for me..
Never bought another album after.. So i can't really comment.
Lol. I just read jnurps post and figured it was more about reviewing the albums.. so i didn't rate them, but i will now..

Lol.. seriously, listen to it again.. haha.. its so boring.. i had this on tape, and those who grew up on tapes know it sucked having to fast forward ,but i often did on that track. I actually listen to that album in the last month or so after some 10 years, and yeah.... i think i dislike it more now!

Re: Rate the entire Megadeth catalogue im this thread
I love that song. It's like a rockin' ballad that doesn't go full syrup or something. Plus it was one of the first "complicated" tunes I learned to play on the guitar. I can't hear it now without thinking about how fun it is to play. His voice annoys me a bit on that one, but the tune is so good I tolerate it.
And it always makes me think of that scene in Decline of Western Civilization II where Mave's taking a huge drag, then starts to blow it out right before the casual, "in my hour of need" into a studio mic with a huge lungful of haze.

I agree with that, its like a rock ballad..
I mean obviously I'm kind of exaggerating on that one, but i really never had the patience for it..

There actually is that one Winger ballad that id put above in my darkest hour! Lol. Can't think of the name, but the video was in black and white (i think) and Reb Beach has a killer outro solo... whelp... there goes all my cred! Haha

Haha.. headed for a heartbreak... There is a kinda dark chord progressing under the solo.. honestly that is the only redeeming value. .
@jiveturkey.. you gotta understand i was 10 yo when i got so far, and song titles like liar as the way he sang that grabbed my attention.. some thing with 502 with the cheesy intro , well its kinda funny. "Pull over shithead, this is the cops!" Lol..
Anyway, i still think they are better than Darkest hour.. idk why besides, i just always get bored quickly with it

Even though i never bought it, from what I've heard and kinda remember i'd say Youthanasia actually had their best tone.. I could be wrong, but it had bigger sound than any other megadeth album which was always kinda cold. I remember thinking Youth had some warmth in the tone

The first 4. After that I don't really care much except for a song or two here and there.
Also Mave's making a complete asswipe of himself constantly as well as his vocals degenerating to a horrific shriek make me not care too much.
But damn, those first 4 albums are the ones I like the most.
Now, remember I didn't "discover" Megadeth until 4 years ago......

Re: Rate the entire Megadeth catalogue im this thread
1. Rust in Peace - Just a masterpiece.
2. Peace Sells - About as close to Rust in Peace in masterpieceness as possible.
3. Countdown to Extinction - The best of the streamlined, slightly-more-accessible Megadeth.
4. Endgame - Shocked the hell out of me when it came out. Felt so much more inspired than everything since Youthanasia, and had the advantage of more fast-paced and thrashy songs.
5. Youthanasia - Awesome, but drags a bit. The record company/Max Norman insisting on the consistent BPM kind of killed a lot of it. I do love me some Eb tuning, though.
6. Killing is My Business - Raw insanity at its finest. Any album with a Monty Python-inspired song is okay in my book.
7. Cryptic Writings - Solid mainstream hard rock. Catchy as fuck.
8. So Far, So Good, So What? - I'd probably have enjoyed this a good bit more without the washed-in-reverb-and-cocaine production job. Some of the songs drag. But the songs are killer.
9. The System Has Failed - Some cool moments, a decent amount of filler. I also HATE that the vocal harmonies in Of Mice and Men.
10. United Abominations - The leads in Burnt Ice and the vocal harmonies in Of Mice and Men almost made me flip these two. But then I remembered about the A Tout Le Monde remake.
11. Risk - Like a failed attempt at an even more watered-down Cryptic Writings. Still some salvageable and catchy moments, though.
12. The World Needs a Hero - Mow tow psy ko... :barf: The world needs this album to be erased from existence. Aside from maybe Dread and the Fugitive Mind. And Return to Hangar, I guess, even with the Mercyful Fate ripoff. But Al Pitrelli belongs in Savatage or with Alice Cooper. Megadeth lead guitarists need 24 frets and Jacksons if they're not Chris Poland.
13. ThOnertThreeen - You know something's wrong when the best songs on an album are re-recordings of previously released songs. Also, I hate Johnny K.
14. Supercollider - I really, really, really fucking hate Johnny K. And Dave Draiman. And "Burn, baby, burn" being seriously used in lyrics. I like Thin Lizzy covers, though.
