New recording desk

I have recently been updating my recording setup. I ditched my Line6 UX2 Toneport
(which served me well for many years!) and upgraded to a Fireface 400. My plan is to
start building a few 4-channel mic pre's. So, I needed somewhere to put all of this stuff.

Laminating the desktop from some 2x4's I ripped.


Desktop laminated and planed.


Added padauk trim, some aniline dye, and prepping rack shelves.


After 1 coat of tung oil.


Fabricating monitor mount.


Mounted monitor & getting everything setup.


Tidying up a bit.

That is the Tascam VL-S21 monitoring package. They stopped making them years ago... like 2008 or so.
They are ok. Really, they're glorified PC speakers. They're good for watching a movie or listening to music.
But, the bass is too subdued to mix with. Everything comes out bass-heavy when you listen to it on another
system. That is actually my next component to upgrade.

Looking to to something similar in my new studio, but will probably have the keyboard and mouse mounted in a drawer underneath the work surface - I want the desk to serve as a bench for doing guitar setups, small electronics (mods) work, etc.

How'd you do the underpinnings? Are the legs recycled from another table?

Hah! That was what made it fun...and relatively cheap

Yeah, I used the bottom section from my old $50 WalMart computer desk.
The reason I didn't hang the keyboard and trackpad from below is because I am going to
put my MIDI controller on a sliding shelf there. It is much larger, obviously, so much more
obstructive.

The desktop is 71"x27". That might seem a little odd. It was 72"x28", but I trimmed the edges squaring it up.
Racks are 4U tall (middle half-rack is 2U) and 10" deep; flush with the back edge of the desk.

To date, I haven't had any real cabling issues. I did put my USB hub on top of the Mac Mini. That helped keep some cable runs shorter and cleaner. The plan is to bastardize the patchbay into a half-rack unit and mount it under the interface. Then, once I get finished building some assorted mic pre's and other miscellany, I can just route everything through the patchbay.
