Computer Sound Processing

If I was too add an external usb interface and set it to be the default input/output, would my computer use it for internal audio processing like for playing a sound file, or would it use the built-in mainboard audio or sound card for playing a sound file, and only use the usb interface for incoming signals/instruments/audio to record or whatever.

I'm not sure how that works. It doesn't seem like it would bypass the internal circuitry to loop out through an external interface then back in to sound devices, but I don't know.

What do you think about that?

You are correct. After playing with all kinds of combinations, I couldn't find a way to loop the internal processing out through the external interface then back in to the built-in headphone/speaker output jack(s). It looks like I have to connect headphones or monitors to the external device only - which cuts down my options. Oh well. Thanks for the help.
