Incoming new monitoring setup day

Post by Markdude »

Just splurged on a monitoring setup that I'll hopefully never feel the need to upgrade from! It's probably overkill for home studio work but I'm tired of using cheap stuff.

The setup will consist of:

Neumann KH-120As:

They have incredible reviews and are constantly favored above other stuff in their price range (like the Adam A7X, Mackie HR824, Dynaudio BM6A).

A Mackie MR10SMk3 subwoofer:

This will be mainly for listening pleasure, but I'll also use it a little bit to make low end decisions. Most of the critical mixing will be done with just the monitors though. I used to have a similar but cheaper setup (Yamaha HS80Ms and a Velodyne sub) and it actually was really helpful checking sub lows against pro mixes. And I'm sure it will rock for non-mixing music listening. It looks like it should be easy to set the crossover accordingly and match the output level with the KH-120As since the KH-120As have a switch to select what SPL will be produced at unity gain, and one of the settings is only 1 dB off from the published SPL of the MR10SMk3 at unity gain.

And Ultimate Support MS80B monitor stands:

I have a pair of IsoAcoustic stands but I don't really like (or trust) them. I'm gonna use these to decouple the monitors and aim the tweeters at my ears.

Can't wait for it to get here! Next I'll probably be buying some material for acoustic treatment.

just read up on the Neumanns - I don't understand the 50W woofer and 50W tweeter amps.
Sure, crossover frequency and speaker efficiency has something to do with it, but it seems you would want more power going to the woofer.

It would seem like a 50W tweeter could keep up with a 200W woofer.
