Lyrics are overrated, but whatever. That's an entirely different discussion. Ozzy IS Black Sabbath IMO. Ozzy has (or had, however you wanna look at it) a good sense of melody, an awesome stage presence, and shitloads of enthusiasm. He might not be the quintessential musician, but he's one of the greatest frontmen of all time. You can't debate that. Sabbath was the highest grossing tour band of the 70s in large part because of Ozzy's live persona and his "fuck yeah!" attitude.
The other guys were all fabulous singers and fit great in Sabbath, but they can't touch Ozzy. No fuckin way.
Can't believe we're having a debate on Ozzy's legitimacy. Wow.
I think I'm gonna have to disagree with you here. Ozzy is NOT Black Sabbath, that honor goes to Tony IMO. Even back then, Geezer wrote most of the lyrics, Ozzy barely pulled his weight back in the seventies, especially towards the end. Ozzy was unique, but lets be honest, he was really just a figurehead for Sabbath even in those day's.
As much as I love the Ozzy day's, the Dio era was just better. Dio really brought out the best in the band, especially Tony. You can't say the same for Ozzy. IMO, they were much more creative, and took bigger risks. I've said this before, and I stand by it, Ozzy really rode the coattails and talent of his bands to success, and that becomes blatantly obvious in the 80's.
My two cents.
It's not his writing, singing or lyrical talent that is the point, it's his voice.
The sound of his voice fit perfectly for what they did. Nobody sounded or sounds like Ozzy did. I love Dio and the work he did with Sabbath. RJD absolutely brought out the best in Tony. But if you listen to the live stuff where Dio (or anyone else) tried to cover the Ozzy stuff it just doesn't sound right. Never will.
Ozzy voice is a main part of Sabbath. Without that, you don't have Sabbath. Same as Tony, Bill, and Geezer. You need all 4 to make Sabbath what it truly is.

Based on sheer singing talent, Dio and Ian Gillen completely sh*t on Ozzy. Ozzy is a caricature of his former self. It's pathetic and he hasn't had a good album since No More Tears. That's just a fact.

also - C# - Snowblind
Despite the mini-rant I just posted; this as well. I dig old Sabbath and early Ozzy. I think he has a specific voice that fit that stuff to a T. I also think he is the heavier equivalent of KISS where he wh*red himself out to the media so much and the quality of his musical output could in no way keep up with the lack of quality in said overexposure. Or something like that

Exactly.. Ozzy and Black Sabbath are the perfect fit.. I never got into any of the other singers.. Especially Dio.. I love when people argue "talent" and only take into account technical ability.. Ozzy sure isn't the greatest technical singer but his sound, feel and attitude are 10x greater than any other Sabbath singer.. He may not have been the main lyricist either, but its still his interpretation of Geezer's lyrics that make the vocals as unique as they are/were..

Nicely put and Dead on truth
Fuck all y'all bitches up in this thread. You are the ones who are the ball lickers!! They should have never gave you idiots an opinion. This is like spitting in your grandfather's face and turning around and praising being alive.
I really have a hard time with Dio singing anything from 1st gen Sabbath. Could you imagine Ozzy singing Mob Rules, Neon Nights, or anything of the other classic 2nd gen stuff?
That said, I absolutely love both generations - to me, they're almost two completely different bands. Radically different sound, composition, style, and both shake my soul to its foundation.

the black sabbath i find myself listening to the most are tuned to Eb.
My favorite of all time is Snowblind and that's in C#, but when I think of Black Sabbath, it's the song Black Sabbath in standard tuning that will always resonate with me. Still gives me the chills whenever I listen to it.
thenakedarab wrote:C#. It's the tuning for the greater part of their music with Ozzy, which is really the only Sabbath I listen to regularly. It's on Master of Reality, Vol 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Sabotage.
I know picking up After Forever was kinda screwy until I realized it was in D instead of C#.

This, too. Went back and listened to Tomorrow's Dream again. It seems like it's actually a little flatter than c#, but definitely not c. I'm pretty tone deaf anyway, and I always played it in dropped D flat.
youtube can be a bad source to check tunings, i've found. it seems that there are a lot of pitchshifted videos out there for a lot of different bands. sometimes i think it's intentional for copyright reasons or whatever, and other times i think it's just fuct up.
on the album itself tomorrows dream is in C#.
the only songs in D i can think of off the top of my head are after forever and the entire born again record.

My thoughts are from Volume 4. The cd, not youtube.
