Explain to me exactly how 'patches' work

There is a lot of talk about patches on the net (I take it these can be downloaded and used with say my logic 9?). How exactly does this process work from start to finish?

Patches are basically just a computer file that you download.
They contain all the settings for the adjustable parameters in your DAW, or hardware like a Snax.

So say you have a Recto patch - all the settings would create the tone of a recto.
or a 'Cathedral' patch - these setting would give you the reverbs, delays, and ambience of playing in a large acoustically complex room.

How you download the patch and apply it will vary with the DAW or hardware, but they all work the same way.

An easy way to get your head around what they are is to replace the word "patch" with "path". There are many paths that a signal can take through the routing matrix of a DAW, or a device. The route you choose to take through that matrix is the "patch".
There really isn't one answer as to how it works from start to finish. A patch can be as simple or as complicated as a recording calls for. One thing that is certain is that the clearer you understand the signal paths of your DAW, the better your recordings will get. Lots of decent free tutorials on YT. If you don't mind paying, Lynda.com has some high quality tutorials that are very informative. Just be sure to check and see that your DAW is covered.

You're gonna have to read the manual for whatever you're working with. A patch, at its most basic, is just a saved group of settings/parameters. It's pretty much interchangeable with the concept of presets - presets are generally just patches that were made to come with the unit/software. Patches are just more presets that you or other users made and saved. The general concept of patches is the same for most things, but the execution of them depends on how the piece of hardware/software is designed. Some DAWs and/or plugins may need to have them in a certain folder for them to show up, some may let you browse and point to them, some pieces of hardware (like guitar preamps, PODs, etc.) may only allow you to enter your own settings and save them as patches, some may allow you to connect to a computer to download user made ones, etc. It all depends.

The most basic example I can think of for a patch is a car radio that lets you save certain frequencies to preset numbers. Each preset is essentially a super basic patch (that's only dealing with one setting - the radio frequency). A similar example would be stereos that either let you save particular EQ settings or come with certain EQ settings that might have names like "Classic", "Jazz", "Rock", "R&B", etc. Those could be thought of as patches. They're just collections of settings. It's stuff you could dial in yourself manually, but having it saved and being able to recall it immediately is what makes it a patch.

For most of the programs like Guitar Rig or Amplitube or whatever, when you buy or D/L them, there will be an installation tool involved as part of the purchase; your DAW should have a menu that drops down/opens up to show you a list of plugins you have available for use or whatever...part of the installation is making those presets available to you to use in your chosen software, although you still have to load the file. So what you'd do is something along the lines of this:

1. Install Amplitube.
2. Open the file in your applications folder and authorize it to your computer.
3. Open Logic, and assign your track info (input #, audio/software instrument, etc...)
4. Assign Amplitube in your mixer to that track (dropdown menu or whatever).
5. Have at it.

Patches are just a group of settings you've saved into certain configurations, and the entire thing, or patch, is how you get noise from your guitar into your computer and then into your DAW, in a certain order....Guitar>Amplitube patch you've made (noise gate, Tube Screamer, Amp model, Filter, compressor, delay)>Logic>speakers

So what would happen is as you make these 'patches' in Amplitube and then save them, they'd become available to you in Logic as you need/want them. Making any sense or no? If it doesn't, tell me and I'll do it again in a different way.

Maybe this will help. I think this is where you import/save/export a preset patch for this dual amp model in Reaper. (.rpl file) This should give you an idea of how to do it in Logic.
