Crowd sourcing stripped Epi LP buildup

Post by Hipster Salad »

Got a black Epiphone LP Muse as part of a trade last week. Had a cracked and repaired headstock, and completely stripped. Kid threw it in for free so I have a blank canvas to work with.

Looking for suggestions to what to load it with. I thought of going cheap and getting a generic 'everything' kit in all black from Guitar Fetish. Goal is decent bang for the buck components. No need to buy high end stuff for this cheap of a guitar, but I'm considering a JB in the bridge just to jazz it up a bit - no pun intended.

Help me out GGFers!

You can go cheap on the hardware. I've tried some hardware from GFS and from Music Lilly (Amazon) and it's decent, specially for a guitar with a fixed bridge.

Spend the money on pickups and good quality pots, jack etc so the guitar sounds good.

These guitars are good beaters/backups.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

I say go full on GFS and put a set of Redactives in there.

The only comment I have regarding cheap hardware, is that you might want to spend a little more on bridge and tailpiece. It's a crap shoot when buying cheap hardware, and I've had cheap bridge/tailpiece that absolutely ruined the tone of the guitar. It was so bad, I thought that something else was wrong with the guitar. I eventually tracked it down to the cheapo bridge. I won't go with anything less than Gotoh.

I highly recommend these tuning machines from Amazon. Copies of 18:1 Grovers and are smooth and stable

Also I would skip GFS pickups and get Toneriders for just a little more. Far superior IMHO.

Redactive Golds from GFS. They're not just bang for the buck pickups. Most of my clips over the last couple years have been those pickups. They bring the br00tz.

The Toneriders are great. I have a couple of different sets and they punch well above their weight. However, don't dismiss the GFS pickups. I bought a set of the Classic II Alnico 2 pickups out of curiosity to compare them to the Seth Lovers. I swear you'd be hard pressed to hear a difference at all. I put them in one of my SGs a few months ago, and still haven't taken them out.

Good points, fellas.

How about color scheme? I'm thinking all black everything.
