NAD - with a catch, and a surprise

Post by Hipster Salad »

Local guy wanting $350 for this.

The catch: Guy said it had sound but was super quiet. Managed to get it for $300 since I had to drive an hour to meet him. I knew it was something more than tubes and fuses, but I'm always game for buying a DOA amp for cheap then repair it.

The surprise: Upgraded iron

And it's a god damn mess in here:

I'd like to have a talk with whoever installed those transformers and kindly ask that they do not do that again. Not sure if the sound issue is new, or if it never had sound after the tranny swap.

I'm sure I can find schematics for the iron even though the company isn't around anymore, but should be fun figuring out what went wrong.

I've had an early 2000s DSL for a bit, then a DSL100H a few years ago. Always loved them, but still did a fair amount of tone chasing.

Was the "black pipe" era the last batch of those before they were discontinued?

Jesus. That’ll be better once it’s cleaned up. Hopefully you can track down the volume issue pretty easily. Whoever did that should be slapped for leaving that rats nest of wiring.

Yes, the black amps are the very last batch of the JCM2000 DSLs.
