Speaker recommendations for 1x12 cab?

Post by ledvedder »

With all the latest speaker choices, I wanted to ask. I have a 1x12 closed back cab with a Greenback that I play with a modded Origin 20 head. It's modded to more of an 800 type tone. Playing with my cover band, I often find that it's a bit too smooth and doesn't cut through the mix so well. Especially with having a 2nd guitarist. We play mainly classic rock stuff, some 90s rock, and also a bit of clean, dynamic tunes. I'd like to replace the Greenback with something that would help with cutting a bit more at times, but not get ear piercingly fatiguing on the ears.

I've seen this one, but never played one. My head is only 20 watts, and I can't get anywhere near that at the venues we play. Would a 150 watt speaker work with that?

Historically I've really liked using GK100 in a 1x12 cab. Has power handling for the majority of any head you could throw at it, and is a fairly neutral speaker

I think the celestion H30 anniversary is my new favorite speaker though. Only 30 watts, but obviously could handle an Origin 20

I tend to prefer higher wattage speakers. But not everyone does I guess. If you think about 4 of them in a 412 with a 100 watt head, each speaker would be getting 25 watts at max output…which realistically never happens lol. So they would see even less in normal use. Similar to a 112 and a 20 watt head.

Is the Redback sort of Celestion's take on an EV12L?

I loved the H30 in an old 4x12 I used to play through at a rehearsal studio. Do you think 1 would be too bassy in a 1x12?

No, I don’t hear that type of sound with it.

No, it's a Greenback with huge power handling.

IMHO if the greenback is not working out, the Redback won't work either since they don't sound all that different. The Redback has a huge low end response since there's a lot more headroom, so that's the main difference. But in terms of highs and smoothness, they're about the same.

IMHO the best options to look at would be V30s and T75s. V30s would cut the best IMHO. They can get ear piercing but you just need to EQ the amp differently. Just keep highs and presence on the low side. I use V30s on all my cabs and don't have any issues.

Honestly, you should be able to re-EQ your amp to work with Greenbacks. I have never played a Marshall/GB rig that wouldn't cut through a mix. :idk:
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

Maybe it's just my old ears

What do you guys think of the Classic Lead 80? I've read a lot about how versatile they are, but never tried them.

I like them. It's a very balanced speaker. Not as smooth as the GB but not as cutting as the V30. Actually, by typing this description I realize it could be a really good option for you.

Well, I just put up an offer for one on ebay, and it was accepted. So, we shall see!

I agree with this. Could probs get away with Cream 75’s but V30’s or T75’s will def cut.

Heritage G30 is a great way to go, but one to try out that I don't think gets much mention is the v-type. It sounds like a Vintage 30 minus the mid-spike and more rounded in the highs. It has quickly become one of my favorite Celestions.
