Synergy has landed

Post by bubbastain »

Luckily I caught the UPS guy just as he was leaving my porch with the box. Signature was required. My two roommates were home but he did the lightest limp wristed knock so they didn't hear him. I just pulled up and said glad I didn't miss you, signed the thingy and then drove away. He didn't even ask who I was or if I lived there. Haha!

Anyways, I got my SYN-1 and SLO module. I also have a Deliverance module coming that should be here Monday. I hooked it up with the 4 cable method to add a channel to my VTM and tested it out. It sounds really fucking good. My initial dial in on the green channel sounded really good and really familiar. So then I bypassed the SYN-1 and realized I had it dialed in to sound 90% like my VTM. That's with the gain on the green channel about 10 o'clock. There is a lot more gain available and the higher I turn the gain on either the green or red channels, then the less it sounds like my amp. Only played it for about 20 minutes, but I like it a lot so far. I'll play it more tomorrow and maybe record a little video clip.

Looking forward to trying out the Deliverance module. The BE Deluxe and the 800 are the two others I'd like to try. Because I don't play with a shit ton of gain I kinda suspect that I might like the 800 module best.

I've listened to a shitload of Synergy module demos lately and the Uberschall module is definitely one of my favorites for sure. Or at least for the higher gain stuff.

I am curious to see what you think about it. I am definitely considering grabbing a Syn 2.

I think you will like the Deliverance module. The SLO is still my #1, but the Deliverance is really cool and versatile. Can dial in two very different tones with the toggles.

The BE Deluxe might be cool if it can be dialed in brighter than the BE module. The BE sounds good on it's own, but it doesn't cut enough for me in a mix.

Just got the Deliverance module in the mail and spent about 30 minutes playing and comparing amp and the two different modules. They all sound really good. As a reference, my core tone is a moderate crunch. On the VTM that is the gain about 11 o'clock, bass just below noon, mid at 11 o'clock, treble just above noon, presence at 11 o'clock. The only dip switch I engage is Gain 1. That gives me my core tone. I love it. Boost it with the Bion boost ( or SD-1) if I want a little more. I tune to drop B and use a 10-52 EB Cobalt set with a PAF ish pickup.

The SLO sounds really cool. I can dial in a tone really close to the VTM and also go way beyond. The Deliverance module I just got is great. I love it. I can dial in a tone that's nearly identical to my VTM tone and so much more. The two channels although they share the B/M/T is a lot more versatile thanks to the little switches. I always wanted to try a Deliverance 60 head but just never had a chance. Plus at first they didn't have a loop. Also, looking at the gut shots of the D60 head I always felt it was way bigger physically than it needed to be. A D60 head the size of the EVH50 would be awesome.

Anyways, I'm really liking the Deliverance module. It's a keeper for sure. If I were to get one more module it would be the BE DLX and then I would sell one of the three. I'm certainly not in a rush to get another though. These two should keep me busy for a little bit. I also can see where some people have mentioned that the modules, or at least the higher gain ones can start to sound similar. I mean the difference in tone between my amp and the two modules is 10% at most.

Here is a clip of the SLO module running 4 cable method into the VTM60. I switch between the VTM and the two SLO channels. Around the 2:45 mark I turn on the Bion

All three (VTM included) sound great, chunky and mean snarl.
I really dig when you added the boost in front!

I really like the SLO module. I love my VTM's and I pretty much dial in every amp for that basic tone. I can do that with the SLO. I just recorded and put up a video clip of the Deliverance module. You can hear that I have the green channel dialed in nearly identical to the VTM.
The Bion boost works great with everything I've put it in front of. Here's the Deliverance clip. I wish I could embed the videos properly from my phone.

Both sound great! Interesting how close both were to the base VTM tone too.

I noticed that you had the Sag knob all the way down. That seems to be the tightest and fastest attack setting with my righ. I keep mine just a touch higher so that the indicator light just starts to turn on when I hit the strings hard. When I want something more classic with a touch less cut, bump it a little bit higher than that.

Haha yeah, I kinda go through the effort and expense to try some Synergy gear only to dial it in to sound like the VTM amp I already own and love. :bang:  But in all fairness I can get fairly different tones as well. I really like the SLO module but I might be selling that one and maybe replace it down the road if they actually do the V2 version with separate EQ for each channel. I'd like to bring up the treble a good bit on the red channel if I'm gonna run the gain knob higher.

I also have a KSR PA50 on the way. :rawk:

That is just about my only gripe with the SLO mod. I would like to be able to dial in a touch more high end on the red channel after I have the other channel dialed in. I could put an EQ in the chain, but then I would be tap dancing going back and forth. Not a big deal for me though since I rarely switch channels during a song. Guitar volume knob and slight volume bump dialed in on the DD500 get me through for leads.

The clips sound great! All the Synergy clips I have been hearing sound great.

Honestly, it doesn't matter what gear I use. I pretty much always dial in 'my' sound on all of it. 20 amps to all sound the same, lol.

Part of why I am looking at Synergy is for the convenience factor. You can swap in some different tones easily, can get rack gear, it is fairly small for what it is, will work well in stereo with effects, can easily work with different power amps, it is just about the only rack preamp you can buy that is not 30 years old, etc....
