A Package Arrives: VSX Essentials

Post by nightflameauto »

Some other nerdy old dork I know, who is even more proficient at hitting target dates than me, sent me a late barfdate present.

The VSX Essentials. It also came with a nice note saying he was tired of listening to me bitch about the shit-awful bass response in my room and I'd best shut the fuck up about it now. He's so cuddly. :cop:

I read up a bit on it. Then added the Archon studio, since everybody from hip-hop heads to metal dudes to country twangers swore that's the best. The midfield setup there is  . Gonna be an interesting weekend once I get some more listening time with them. I can actually hear articulation in the low end now, and some things in the upper mids and highs that even my better/even more ridonk expensive open-back headphones weren't great at. Gonna spend some days listening to classics and then try a mix with 'em. When I listen to my last few mixes I'm definitely hearing some room for improvement.

I've used other room emulators in the past, so wasn't expecting much from this. But thus far I'm impressed. Gonna be interesting to see if anybody here hears a difference in my next few mixes.

Anybody else on this particular train? Seems a sane solution for those of us that can't afford thousands in acoustic treatment.

I bought a pair of Beyerdynamic DT700 Pro X headphones recently, and these were second on my list. Ultimately, I decided I'm not really mixing on headphones, so I wanted something more "standard". But if I was doing any kind of mixing outside of my studio, I would've bought these. They seem to get awesome reviews all around.

I really want to try these. I usually don't mix with headphones either but I'm open to doing it. It would be great no to have to car test every mix.

This is definitely a good point. Maybe I should've got them anyway! haha

I wonder if the car sim has 2013 Mini Cooper Hatchback with stock, non-Harman Kardon stereo?

No. On their own they're just ultra-flat headphones with somewhat better-than-expected bass response.

Today I've been fiddling with a mix and then checking in my usual environment. Definitely not a world changer, but I am able to sort out some of the low-end issues I was having. And it's cool to flip to the SUV (only vehicle sim included in essentials) to check things. Songs I know really well sound almost identically in my dad's Escalade, so, yeah, I'd say it's pretty accurate and a good way to spot-check against known reference material.

Should be fun pulling a mix together with these as another option. Anything that gives me "different" without getting off my fat ass is a :thu: .
