My 60s LP had a more carved carve top than a modern LP, so the tailpiece floated higher than what I'd see these days. I'd imagine the carves were pretty inconsistent back in the day, and the stoptail/TOM seems designed to accommodate for that.

Personally, I could never tell any difference between having the TP floated at the correct angle or slammed with a top wrap.

If you top wrap, check out the Joe B. trick. Cut the ball end off of your old strings and use it as a spacer for the new ones. Run the new strings through the ball end and then the stoptail. It pulls the new ball end back enough so you are wrapping only the string around instead of the wrap too.

I have no idea if it was his idea originally, but that is how I discovered it.

It's using the ball end of the old string like a washer to push the ball end of the new string away from the tailpiece. This lets the string wrap the tailpiece more closely because it doesn't start bending properly until the wrapped part ends and the wrapped part is pushed further back into the tailpiece.

This is indeed a cool bridge. I wouldn't put it on a LP because I like the traditional look and frankly a standard TOM works just fine for me.

But for modern guitars with a TOM, yeah that looks like a great replacement. I'd get one for my Star if the price wasn't so high. It looks like a really well designed bridge though.
