6505 vs 5153 el34 100 watt

Post by EndTime »

Listenig back to our last show, I wasn't happy with the FOH guitar tone, but that was my fault, in that I was hammered and forgot to check mic placement.. And no one in the crowd thought it sounded bad. In fact they all said everything was killer but I didn't like how bright it was.. So I was just going thru my amps and doing a standard 57 towards the center of the speaker since that seems to be what the sound guys do, and wanted to hear what IM getting and maybe some different settings bkbakbka.. Point being I messed with my 6505 in a way Ive somehow never tried! Which is to run that Presonus EQ3b in front. I ve used that with great results on the 5153 blu and XXX but I really don't remember trying it with the 6505. And honestly I never loved using a boost on the 6505. Eve with low gain settings its very saturated.. And the Presonus keeps the rawness in a really cool way and keeps the punch..

One of my main hard drives took a shit so I used a song that was available and haven't played it in awhile, so some bad fuckups, but there was no effort besides cutting 2 tracks!! Both on the Red channels. When usually I use the blu on the 5153 with some kind of boost or the Presonus. Which is prolly my favorite, but I didn't do it here.. Anyway I really do like em both a lot.. I turned down the treble on the 5153 red a touch just from how I usually set it.. So thats why its a touch darker.. The 6505 with just that EQ in front which really doesn't do a ton of Boosting.. It just shape that tone hitting the preamp.. It feels unboosted when playing for sure.. But the raw tone and aggression is definitely why the OG PV will never DIE!! haha

And heres a quick clip of the 6505 git buss solo. Altho I forgot to turn off the mastering chain and maximizer. SO it sounds kinda harsh and not correct.. But for shits

Both sound great but I prefer the clarity of the OG 6505 by quite a bit.

This sounds more like how I would dial the 5153s. A little darker. I like that one better, but the 6505 is pretty close, and seems to cut a bit better in this case. Also has that Peavey aggression.

Interesting you hear more clarity with the 6505. Cause that’s one thing I think for sure the 5153 has more of. But that’s actually the charm of the 6505 is it’s dirtier and not quite as clear, maybe in this case of just hammering metal rhythms, but on bigger chords and other style of playing the 5153 has clarity with as much gain as humanly possible! Hahah

I like em both about equal. I prolly should cut one with the blue channel boosted with the EQ3b. That really is a special tone right there. I just don’t use the EQ3b all the time cause it’s a bit noisy and just sorta clunky to have around, just set it on top of the amp, but turn the gain on the blue channel to 10 and use the Presonus and that shit feels like the hammer of the gods! It sounds so good. I brought that to a few shows and the one show the sound guy was a real pro and basically every guitar player in the crowd and in the other bands said that I had the best tone! Not even exaggerating. Heard it countless times after the set. But that had a lot to do with the soundguy too. Cause that was by far the best on stage sound too. One of those times it sounded like a CD thru the monitors. Now THATs rare but it made for a great show and experience on stage

And I just listened on my way home, one thing the 5153 definitely has is that low mid growl. That adds clarity to on the real fast trem picked ending. I love the aggression of the PV but that 5153 just growls more. And I could dial a touch more highs. I just took em down to see if I felt it would translate better live.

I like them both. Maybe a slight edge to the EVH but the Peavey sounds awesome too.
But most importantly, this track is killer!!!

The 5153 has that extra thickness in the low mids and is a bit darker overall, which is less fatiguing than the 6505.
Also those are some fucken wild riffs!

I guess I associate less lower mids of the 6505 as my preferred version of clarity? Either way, splitting hairs. The 5153 sounds a little more modern, 6505 more vintage. Like I said, both are epic tones.

Finally!! J/K. But yes man. It’s always about the song so really appreciate that. I love to fuck with tones as much as the next guy buy in the end it’s all about finding something that makes the song work best. Beyond that, I don’t care much!

I would be happy with both and initially I was feeling the 6505 a touch more but when I revisited it a bit later, started digging the 5153. Gonna add a touch of the presence back on that amp and it’ll be where I want it

Definitely splitting hairs. This really was an effort to just revisit the tones I’m using live as I didn’t like how my amp sounded Thru the FOH last show. There’s obviously more to it than just my amp but wanted to hear both of these and decide which one I’m gonna use for this weekend. I think I might use the 6505 with the Presonus EQ3b. But for the tune, I’m leaning. 5153 with a touch more presence added

RaceU4her wrote:i always wanted one of those eq3b's. what you boosting, 800hz?

Tough to say. As it just has a few frequencies printed, but for the 6505 I am a bit below the 1khz. So it’s around 800hz for sure. I’ll swing a bit below 1k and a bit above depending on the amp.

The thing is not how you’d think. It’s line level, so without some sort of buffered pedal in front, it sounds like shit cause it’s cutting volume into the amp. So it has to be run after a buffered pedal. At least I think that’s what’s going on. And even then it’s not really BOOSTING volume. But allows good shaping of the input. So let’s say if you used the gain at 6 normally with no boost, you’d still keep it at 6 with this cause it’s not adding gain or saturation even if you are slamming the setting of 800hz. S

But it does do a great job of tightening and adding aggression anyway.

For instance I bought his Pro tone CorMid Boost. Which is a parametric Eq as well. Sorta developed to take place of this and it’s a pedal so it’s very capable of working well in a guitar chain and can easily boost volume as well. So when I use that, now I have to turn the gain down cause it’s adding saturation and gain. I get good results with that as well, but it’s just not quite the same. So I haven’t found anything that truly does what the Presonus does. Even tho it’s kinda noisy, rather cheap but seems built tough, it just does sumthin I haven’t found another eq to replicate.

And it truly works great with my 5153 on the blue channel and of course the xxx.

I literally just snagged an old Boss Parametric EQ last night online. As I would love to find a pedal that does the same basic thing. Just cause it would be easier to have on my board etc. rather than having this unit sit on my amp, and have a wall wart to power it etc

Have you tried the Tech 21 Q-Strip? It's a great pedal for this type of boosting.

I have!! Was interesting but didn’t do it in the same way. The Boss is prolly my last parametric I’ll try. It seems well regarded. And in the end I can make the Cor mid boost work as well, but it flattens/smooths the high end a touch that the Presonus doesn’t. The Presonus seems to let all the signal Thru while the Cor mid, is sorta reacting like an OD with added mids and less highs and bass. Again, I get along with it just fine and it’s a great pedal for this as well. But… Still gonna see what this Boss does

5153 is the clear winner for me. I prefer everything about the gain structure, and it sounds a lot more clear in the mix than the 6505. 6505 certainly still sounds great as well though!

Before I have to lose my recording setup by tearing my gear down for the show tmro, I re-recorded the 5153 a bit brighter and tossed a 6505 track in the center track, about 7 db down just to add a bit sumthin. This did what I was hoping… I think lol

Pretty much echoing what is already said, the 5153 is punchier and clearer in the single amp clips, the one with the dash of 6505 adds that little spice to the top, sounds brutal dude!
