Initially, yes. He had his plexi into a completely dry cab, then he took a line out to a completely wet power amp and cabs.

But around the time he moved to the SLO and 5150s, he started to use load boxes. He Initially had Bob Bradshaw make him some custom loads, then he switched to Palmer loads later.
Once started using loads, the amp was completely loaded down and split 3 ways to both his wet and dry power amps. In that configuration, the dry cab was completely dry and the wet cabs had dry signal mixed in.

Friedman did a really good interview about Eddie's rig on the Chairmen of the Board podcast. He wired some of those rigs himself so he's a really good source of information.

Both clips sound great and fairly close, I definitely can hear the superiority of the SDE for that particular sound tho

But I can see how it would be hard to justify keeping both, especially considering the expanded flexibility of the dd500

The clips are relevant to my interest because I have been looking at a proper digital delay with tap tempo function and Boss hasn’t let me down in the delay department. Despite my love of AIDs.

So after spending some more time with both pedals this morning, I figured out the main difference.

The SDE mode on the 500 sounds identical to the EVH pedal BUT it only allows a single delay.

The 500 has a Dual delay mode but the tone is darker than the SDE mode. That's the mode I used on the 500 clip. I thought it was dual SDEs but it's not, it's a different algorithm altogether.

The EVH has dual SDE modes. So you get the SDE sound AND dual delay capability. So that's pretty cool.

But obviously the 500 has analog and tape emulations, a more advanced modulation section, reverse delays, ducking, EQ etc. So it's definitely a more complete unit. In fact, it does so much, it's currently the only pedal on my board, aside from my overdrive.

I'm still planning to take both pedals to practice on Sunday and do a full volume test but at that moment I'm leaning towards the 500.

I think the EVH sounds come dialed for the W/D/W setup because in mono they sound super wet. But that's easy to fix, no big deal.

Did you click the EVH button twice to put it into Stereo/Mono mode? Those are supposed to be tweaked presets specifically for that use. Although I still think they're pretty wet.

Either way it sounds fucking awesome to me. DD-500 sounds great too! Since I have neither DD-500 nor EVH I am still leaning towards EVH. :hmm:

No I didn't know that was an option, the manual is not very helpful. I'll play with it more this evening.

It's a great sounding pedal. I'm still trying to decide if I'll keep it or not, but I have absolutely nothing negative to say about it. They really did a great job putting the SDE in a pedal format with no compromises.

When you click EVH button once it's lit up red for wet/dry/wet, click it again and it should change to green for stereo/mono. This also applies to the Bank A/B button. There are like four different manuals but the "reference manual" on Boss website is super long and in depth. My guess is this pedal did not come with this version of manual?!

Also, check out how Pete is running it in mono. He's still using 4 cable method in mono which confuses tf out of me. I think that is to utilize the noise suppression but I'm not sure?!?

The pedal came with the Start Up Guide and the Ground Lift instructions. I downloaded the Reference Manual but I haven't read it the entire thing yet.

So from my understanding presets 5-8 are 1-4 tweaked for stereo/mono. Same with Bank A/B. However in the words of Alex Jones I am kinda retarded.

Has Boss already released any updates for this pedal?

I ran into some confusion with my RE-202 when reading the reference manual with things not matching up with what I said but it turned out I needed to update it for those features to work

Boss is absolutely killing the game with their mega pedals, but the manuals range from adequate at best to awful

I actually asked him this question on Instagram . It's to trigger the noise gate with the direct guitar signal.

So I did the 4cm thing that Pete was doing and now that I understand that green LED is for mono setups, I am really start to get the hang of this pedal and I am glad I didn't give up on it because holy shit this thing is awesome!!!! There is no way I am returning it now  I am going to post some new clips once I am done making some presets.

Now, I need instant access to 3 sounds. A short delay mixed low for my rhythm tone, a longer delay mixed higher for leads and a modulated delay for cleans.
On the DD-500, there is a way to change the TAP button into a 3rd preset. If there is a way to do the same on this one I am good to go, but at first glance I don't t see it.

I have to deep dive a bit more and maybe even look into other switching options. If I can assign the modulation depth to an expression pedal or the modulation on/off to an external footswitch that would actually solve my problem.
If I can't do any of the above, I think I will get a MIDI adapter so I can run a small MIDI footcontroller.

Well shit... I ordered one from Sweetwater.

I need the exact same three settings you mention here. When you get it dialed please share them with me!!!

Also, with 4cm how do you run other pedals like OD or Fuzz in the chain if you're plugging guitar direct into EVH? Do you put them in the loop of the EVH?

You'll patch in the EVH to your existing pedals wherever you want it, assuming at the end before the amp, then run the cable from the direct output to the front of the amp. Then the effects loop send to the Ext Loop input, and corresponding EFX back to the effects loop return on the amp.

I *think* that's the routing based on looking at pics. At least that's how my HXFX works if I want to run 4cm with additional pedals out front.

So here's how I have my signal chain set up right now.

Guitar into tuner into the wah pedal. That's all before the SDE3000, since there is no gain being generated at that point.

From the Wah output, I am going into the SDE3000 input.

From the SDE3000 Send I go into my SD1 overdrive Input.

From the SD1 output it goes to the front of the amp.

The amp FX Send goes to the SDE3000 FX Return

The SDE3000 Output goes into the Amp FX return.

So yes, I am putting the whole gain stage (boost + amp preamp) in the loop of the SDE3000.

I was also able to find a workaround for the modulation sound I need. On my main sound with the short delay, I assigned the TAP button to turn the modulation of Delay 2 on/off. So that effectively gives me an option to add modulation to my cleans. It works fine.

But I ordered the Boss MIDI cable since I have a small Tech21 MIDI Mongoose footcontroller here so I will eventually use that to create different presets. Seems like a waste not to use it since this pedal is capable of so may different sounds. The cable should be here tomorrow and I will dive into the MIDI programming.

Once I have everything programmed I will make an updated video. The first one did not do the pedal justice since I only had it for a few hours. This pedal is very much like the rack unit in the sense that it takes some time to learn how to get the hang of it, it is not nearly as intuitive as most modern gear. I also printed out the PDF manual because the old style display is limited so the parameters name are abbreviated and hard to understand, so it really helps to have the print out as a reference when you're trying to decipher some DL1 ONNOM NOM EXCL1.2 type of bullshit

Shit like this:

Good fucking luck knowing WTF this means without the manual. Boss really could have used a modern display on this thing. It looks cool the way it is but goddamn, that aspect of the pedal is a trip to the bad side of 1988 lol. Or at least come up with a computer editor, there is an USB port on it anyway. Fucking hell.
I got the hang of the workflow now, but the manual is kind of essential in the beginning. Pete's video is awesome too and made me understand some shit that was confusing even on the manual.

Re: Anyone played the Boss EVH SDE 3000 delay?

I just got the MIDI cable and setting up MIDI is pretty straight forward. Pretty much plug and play, but one thing you have to keep in mind is that after you plug the MIDI cable you have to power cycle the pedal so it can recognize the MIDI controller. The manual doesn't mention it so I spent some time thinking I had a bad MIDI cable.

I had first practice with it yesterday.
A few observations:

1- it's an awesome sounding pedal for the 80s stuff

2- it is indeed the EVH Hagar sound

3- it's a super wet pedal. Obviously you can turn the mix down but then it loses what makes it special. The pedal is meant to be set really wet.

I enjoyed using it but still ended up using the DD-500 for most of the practice. The SDE still need some tweaking to be just right.
I also found that I can get what I want from the DD-500 much easier than from the SDE. Granted, the DD-500 has been my main effect for the past 5 years, while I have 5 days with the SDE. I'm sure that will level out with time.

I'm most definitely keeping this pedal. I want to build a dedicated board for it just with 80s stuff: Arion Chorus, Nobels ODs, Phase 90 and the SDE. :)
