Anyone played the Boss EVH SDE 3000 delay?

Post by Telephant »

I’m extremely tempted by this pedal but I don’t know if it would be worth it in mono.

I want to go crazy and buy a stereo poweramp and run wet dry wet but hard to justify when I would never gig it. Then again you can also w/d/w into a DAW and that would be fun for home use. :hmm:

I haven't played one yet, but I've also really curious about it. My main delay is a Boss DD-500 and the SDE mode is excellent. Which is what is stopping me from buying the SDE, I am not sure if it would be that much of an upgrade for my needs.

On a recent podcast Dave Friedman said that the EVH pedal is only necessary if you want to do W/D/W, for mono the regular version would work the same. But idk, the difference in price is only 100 bucks so if I end up getting the SDE, it will be the EVH version, just in case I want to do W/D/W one day.

But I actually want the EVH presets and only the EVH version has noise gate! Plus lets be honest EVH version looks badass. :D

I’ve realized I want to be able to quickly switch between long and short delay. And while I can hold footswitch on Cole ider to switch presets, that’s too sketchy for live use.

We had/have a few, Altho, I imagine they sold already, and yeah it’s cool and immensely thought out and can do the EVH wdw thing no doubt.

But this was also at the time I bought the Boss PS-6 which has the stereo Detune. And because I’d never actually get a true wdw setup, I used the detune in stereo. I posted a clip a bit of go and for my needs and just an awesome tone. If you just are looking for the big stereo spread of that sound he was doing, you can’t go wrong with the Boss PS-6 either. Really high quality sound…
Here’s the clip. I used my 6505 and 5153 el34. Just a stereo setup. 2 mics without any real setuo and instant true stereo sound

Wait you have a shop now? :hmm:

Clips sounds great too! I hVe never even looked at the PS-6. I was actually looking at the Eventide Micro Pitch Delay.

While I have you here… and Billy chime in too…. Do you think I could get close enough to Balance tone with EVH Stealth 6L6 or should I really be looking for Peavey 5150 or 5150 II?

The snob in me likes the idea of the EVH branded heads but I love Edwards’s FUCK and Balance tones. I know he used some SLO on FUCK but I’ve been watching ton of live vids on Youtube from this era and he has the 5150’s by then.

I became the guitar tech/repairman at a shop. I still do my floors but I needed to take some of the physical strain off and the opportunity came up and I’m doing both. So no, not my shop, but of course I get to play with all the toys that come in.

And yeah the PS6 is definitely in line with the Eventide micro pitch.

As far as the Eddie balance tone. I’m not alm that familiar chasing that besides I know it’s very much this detune sound which I know he did before then, but I think he sorta mastered it on Balance. By then he may have been using a modded 5150 that became the 5152. Not sure, but I’d prolly go there or the Stealth 5153 6l6. I have the 100 watt el34 5153. And it’s a fucking monster and the blue channel is more Marshall for sure. But the amp in general is prolly the most metal sounding, so that’s why I would say the 6l6 stealth.

Overall the original 5153 is prolly closest to the balance stuff but the blue channel on those is a bit light in the gain, imo. It’s a great rock tone but don’t think it quite gets there. The red of the orginal 5153 sounds more like later Hagar era Evh tones. The Stealth blue has that extra gain I think would get the right amount of saturation. And then. The red is just the high gain channel.

Alright so I have a quick clip uploading now, not sure why YT is taking forever to process it.

In the meantime, I will ramble about it a bit. The tl;dr is I am on the fence about this pedal. Does it sound awesome? Yes. Does it sound an awful lot like the SDE mode of the DD-500? Also yes. An awful lot. I mean, am pretty sure it's the same SDE algorithm with a few tweaks here and there.
The noise gate is cool and works really well. The 80s style displays look good, but are frankly a pain in the ass to navigate.

The EVH presets are really cool, although again, it's nothing you can't dial in with the Dual mode of the DD-500.
I think the EVH sounds come dialed for the W/D/W setup because in mono they sound super wet. But that's easy to fix, no big deal.

Anyway, i will post a clip soon. So far I am not entirely convinced it's a keeper since I already have the 500 but it's certainly a great pedal!!

There you go. Just playing some random shit on the DSL. This is the EVH1 preset, which is supposed to be his main delay tone. I turned down the mix a bit but it's still super wet.

Initially, yes. He had his plexi into a completely dry cab, then he took a line out to a completely wet power amp and cabs.

But around the time he moved to the SLO and 5150s, he started to use load boxes. He Initially had Bob Bradshaw make him some custom loads, then he switched to Palmer loads later.
Once started using loads, the amp was completely loaded down and split 3 ways to both his wet and dry power amps. In that configuration, the dry cab was completely dry and the wet cabs had dry signal mixed in.

Friedman did a really good interview about Eddie's rig on the Chairmen of the Board podcast. He wired some of those rigs himself so he's a really good source of information.

Yeah in the room they sounded close but I hear it in the clip that the dd500 sounded darker. That's easy to fix though since the DD500 has an EQ for the repeats.

I haven't decided yet if I'm keeping one or both. I'm taking them to practice this weekend. It's hard to really tell well how things really perform until you take it it live at band volumes.
