5153. Dead.

Post by Chris Z »

After moving and having my 5153 in storage for 6 months. I put my rig back together, 5153 into a Suhr Reactive Load IR, it used to work perfect, now the amp powers up but no signal to the loadbox. Removed all cables and tried to go from the preamp out to the DAW. No signal. Amp is on and changing channels, but no sound. Tried going out from the efx out to the DAW, same thing.

1. Could it be a fuse blew and needs to be replaced?
2. Tubes could have become unseated and everything needs to be pulled out and put back in?
3. Power tube or preamp tube went bad? No rattling sounds like a broken tube, checked twice.
4. I think I have the original power cable but not sure if I put a wrong one in?
I don't want to spend alot on tubes if they're not needed, either preamp or power tubes, but thats going to a pro to set up and bias.
Some guys like a challenge. Not me.

have you tried bypassing the preamp and just running into the power amp?

Are you saying running another amp into the 5153 effects in? I don't have another amp to do that....

Is there another way to run into the poweramp?

You can just plug the guitar straight into the FX return and you'll know pretty quick if the power amp is the problem or not. I'd recommend starting with the master volume all thr way off before plugging in then slowly turning up to see if you get signal..

Preamp tube could cause this, even if it’s not obvious. Fuse will prevent the whole thing from powering on.

Plug a guitar into fx return to determine if it’s a power amp or preamp issue. If you have clean guitar sound, it’ll be preamp.

I’d guess a preamp tube is dead, so if you’ve got one you know is good, just swap one by one until you have sound.

Definitely try this and see if you get signal. The 5153 master volume is part of the preamp so it won't have any effect in the sound, but you should be able to get a loud and clean tone if the power section is working.

Also check you HT fuse. Amps have 2 types of fuses. The mains fuse, if blown, will keep your amp from powering on. But with the HT (heater) fuse the amp will still power on, just without sound. In the 5153, the external fuse is the main but they do have an internal HT fuse. Open the amp up and check if the fuse is blown, and if it is, replace it with the same type. I think it's a 5A FA fuse but don't quote me on it (it should be marked on the fuse, if not, check with EVH)

1 50w should be about a 2amp fuse on the internal (maybe 3), 5 on mains. if the b+ fuse blew there is something wrong most likely a bad tube somewhere sucking up too much amperage.

So, whatever happened with this? I was curious of the help provided to see if it was the preamp or the power section.

I tried guitar directly into effects in and no change. Fuse was fine and tubes seemed ok. I have instrument insurance so I filed a claim and should be getting a check.

Damn that's great. I didn't know they covered this kind of issue.

My premium is $250 a year, covers all my guitars, amps, speakers. Doesn't cover accessories like pedals, loadboxes, computers or peripherals.

i filed yesterday and they already started the process of putting in a payment to me. And no deductible.
