Wiring Help?

Post by facefirst »

So I have a 2 HB guitar with 1 volume and no tone controls and a 5 way.

It's currently wired
1 - Bridge
2 - Bridge split
3 - Bridge +Neck
4 - Neck split
5 - Neck

I'd like to rewire it to
1 - Bridge
2 - Bridge split
3 - Bridge +Neck
4 - Neck
5 - Neck split

Any chance someone better at diagramming than me could help me out? I'm great at soldering, not so great at figuring out these details though.

Here's how it is currently wired

I think you just need to reverse the position of the Red and green/ white wires on the neck pickup, then the grey wire has to be moved to the new red wire location.

But let's wait for more opinions on this because I'm not 100% sure.

But also I have to say I like the way it is now. Having the full bridge and neck pickup at the outer positions allows you to just quickly slap the switch for fast changes between the 2 pickups.

Position 4 is something you have to be more precise to get to. 1 and 5 are easier.

In the wedding band I’m in I switch a lot between a split neck and full HB bridge. Since I got my Suhr Pete Thorn (which splits the HB in position 5) I’m so used to it that when I switch to my Kiesel it throws me off having to hit position 4 on the fly.

Oh shit. I forgot you have the Suhr. That solves the problem. Just copy the switch wiring from the Suhr to the Kiesel. The extra tone control on the Suhr doesn't affect the switch wiring at all.

The Suhr is on a super switch so it is throwing me for a loop.

OK I think I'm right with my suggestion but let's see if anyone else chimes in.

This might help too... if you want to translate the Suhr wiring into the regular switch

The other option is to just use a superswitch, which I actually have on hand.

So here's the wiring diagram for the Suhr Pete Thorn. My guitar only has a single vol and no tone. If I were to use a push/pull vol pot how could I accomplish this wiring or something similar?

Please correct me if I'm wrong here. I'm guessing that the wiring from the bridge HB and switch that goes to the push/pull part (and the appropriate grounds) would still go to the push/pull part but on the vol pot. Would I still need the 22n resistor?

I didn't realize the PT was wired that way. That is a really cool setup and for a dual humbucker guitar, I could see how that would be useful. The Thornbucker neck pickup and Thornbucker II bridge are my absolute favorite set right now and sound incredible in my Wolfgang.

Mine came witht he the original Thornbucker in the bridge but I swapped it for a TB 2. Great pickup!

I have the Thornbucker and Thornbucker+ in another guitar, but I definitely prefer the TB II with the Alnico II instead of the Alnico IV in the TB+. Best all-around neck pickup hands down. Great clear-sounding pickups. My PRS is going to end up with either a thornbucker set or a thornbucker in the neck and a woodbucker in the bridge.

well the push-pull is for series/parallel for the bridge pickup so if you don't need that you can bypass that circuit altogether.

In that case the pickup white and red wires would go where that yellow wire is on the switch, the pickup black wire would go where the bare wire is on the switch (the 3 lugs wired together) and the pickup green and bare would go to the volume pot case.

Preface: I consider myself of the relatively decent side of normal intelligence.

I can't wrap my mind around switch wiring logic to save myself. Sometimes, I wish everything used a 3 way toggle.

I can sort of understand the Gotoh blade switches, but as soon as stuff is off kilter like a Fender 3/4/5 way, I start getting confused. The Schaller Super switch is an entirely different ballgame. You might as well call the ambulance. I don't understand the wiring in it.

So is the black being connected to all 3 of those lugs?

I don't think that will work in this case, because what makes the coil split happen, when using a Strat 5-way, occurs only in positions 2 and 4 of the switch. Positions 1, 3, and 5 on a Strat 5-way, I don't see how you would ever get the coil splitting.

(Tech talk: what makes the coil split happen on a Strat switch is having two switch contacts connected to the output, not just one. On positions 2 and 4 on a Strat switch, two switch contacts are connected. (That's how, when switching the pickup hot signal, you get for example neck + bridge.) On positions 1, 3, and 5 on a Strat switch, only one switch contact is connected to the output.)

With a superswitch, you can do anything, in any position. :) Like on your Suhr. I think you would need a superswitch in order to get that set of coils active in those switch positions.

Thanks for the help, fellas.

So I luckily have a spare superswitch. Does this look accurate? Since Kiesel and Suhr have different colors I figured I should map it all out with the Kiesel colors since it'll be easier to follow for me.

Yep. Looks good.

As for the volume pot, it's just a treble bleed. So 470pf should do it. You can also just leave it out if you don't want/ like treble bleeds. I never use them.
