How do I test different strap button positions?

Post by GuitarBilly »

I want to move the top strap bottom on my Jackson Star from the neck plate to the side of the body. But I need to find the right spot to make sure the guitar will still balance well.

Is there a way to temporarily attach a strap button to the guitar without drilling it to test different spots?

I was thinking of just taping the strap to the guitar but that's not completely accurate. Any ideas?

Super glue? Scrape it off the finish if you don't like the spot? I dunno

Maybe some dual-lock (the crazy strong 3M velcro-ish stuff)? I'd think if you didn't leave it on long it shouldn't be too hard to take off but idk

Might be a little ghetto but command hooks actually come off pretty well on the various surfaces I’ve used them on.
Could be worth a try.

Alien/Nano tape? Not sure it would hold strap button on strong enough. Then again, if it does hold strong it could rip some paint off when taking it off.

Yeah, the 3M hooks were my first thought too. I have in the past duct taped something to the guitar to approximate a strap pin, but the hooks are a better idea.

Yes, Command hooks, dual lock or heavy duty double stick tape. Make sure which ever you choose its 3M. When I was still a machinist we would use 3M VHB double stick tape to stick metal to a milling machine table and make parts out of it cutting around it water jet style. That is thousands of pounds of force when cutting and never had one let loose making thousands of parts. The key is after it sticks putting mechanical pressure on it like with a clamp for at least 20 seconds. Isopropyl alcohol will release it without damaging the finish on your axe.
