I respect the talent, but I feel this genre would be appropriate for the doctors office waiting area, or when you're stuck on hold for an hour or so.

I tried bouncing around to different parts, but nothing was really grabbing me.

I mean, they have people singing along with their guitar parts, so people are into them and know the music, but I'm clearly not their target market.

Good lord, if I went to a show and it took this long for something to happen, I'd probably topple over into a heap. How do they keep themselves awake playing this shit?

i dunno. watching guys do that doesn't do anything for me. maybe i'm old, but that shit is as dispassionate as it gets. ain't baggin on it, and i'll listen to that over pentatonic wank most days, but it's still unlikeable musically cause i just don't care that they're 'good at their craft'. songwriting is important, and going somewhere is kinda an important goal of songwriting. that just feels about as passionate as a german touch typing demo.

It's not age for me, it's complexity. I didn't like complex music when I was younger either.
Even stuff like Dream Theater or Rush, I was never a huge fan. Jazz, fusion.. nope, not for me.
I do have a lot of respect for the players but I just don't listen to it.

I like advanced guitar playing when it comes to solos or riffs but as far as songs go, I like a hook, chorus etc... once it goes into the weeds of instrumental music, I can only take small amounts of it.

When I was growing up, listening to Nile and Necrophagist, I used to wonder what kind of music future kids would irritate their parents with.

Gotta admit, I didn't see Bieber coming.

Nor Polyphia.

I am the same as most that already posted. Amazing musicians, but I cant really listen to it long. I feel the same about most instrumental music though.

That's what I was thinking.

Like everyone else I respect their musicianship but I'm not moved by their music.

I ended up watching the whole show last night anwya.

My thoughts:

- The level of playing is indeed amazing! Crazy that these guys can play this stuff live with such precision.

- Their tones are great, there's not a lot of gain and it's definitely on the cleaner side of even straight up rock tones, which make the playing even more impressive. I assume they're all on modeling? Whatever it is it works great for their music.

- Getting a crowd to be engaged like that to purely instrumental music is not an easy feat.

So yeah, I like it. I can't really say this is something I'd be listening to on a regular basis. Same with Vai etc... but in small does it's great. This show was fun to watch.

I have two "lanes" I live in when I consume music.

Lane 1: Would I listen to this to just enjoy it as a listener? This is stuff like Sleep Token, James Taylor, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.

Lane 2: Would this music influence/inspire me to learn more guitar tricks? This is stuff like Limp Bizkit, Van Halen, Extreme, Polyphia, Rage Against The Machine, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, Sikth, etc.

I like different things as a musician than I do as a listener, if that makes any sense. The musician in me loves Polyphia, but in small doses... since it's super complex. I find that listening to them from time to time adds things to my writing vocabulary, and I definitely try to ape their vibe sometimes. That band has contributed to me being a better player.

Yes, I look at Polyphia the same way I look at Limp Bizkit.

i honestly thought they were an "internet" band, ive seen clips of them individually playing through their songs but i never saw them as a band, maybe its there and i never looked.. but just seeing them as a band and how effortlessly they pull that shit off is pretty impressive to me even if im not gonna listen to them everyday. it makes me want to practice watching them.

I really dug the keyboard intro and the first two songs. After that, I was like, "I wish they had a keyboard player".
