Cheap pedals.

Post by GuitarBilly »

So from time to time, whenever I have a credit from a return or a gift card, I buy cheap pedals at Amazon just to try them out. Like Joyo type of stuff. Many of them are not great tbh but that's what Amazon returns are for

That said, over the years I've found a handful that are actually really good pedals:

Caline Englishman - this is a dead-on copy of the Carl Martin Plexitone, which is my favorite Marshall in a box pedal. I have them both and they're identical.
Mosky 250X - this is a distortion pedal with a switch that goes from a DOD250 preamp to a MXR Distortion +. Both are very accurate.
Sonicake Cloud Chorus V2 - analog chorus, very close to the CE-2 sound.
Kokko Overdrive - exact copy of the TubeScreamer mini. I have both of them here too.
Kliq Tinytune - very accurate tuner pedal, large bright display that is easy to see under any light conditions. I've compared it with my pitchblack, TU-2 and TC tuners and the accuracy is the same (it's actually slightly more accurate than the Boss).
Donner Yellow Fall - analog sounding digital delay. Sounds great and works with hot effects loops, it worked well even with the Soldano Avenger loop, which was the most challenging loop I had recently.

Outside of Amazon but definitely worth buying:

JRR Pedals OD1.3 Distortion Pedal Great Fulltone OCD copy with a twist: the Low/High peal control is on a footswitch so you can easily toggle between both voicings. I like this better than the original OCD for that reason alone.

All these pedals are under $50 and I have no issues recommending them.

Any other cheap pedals worth checking out?

I have a JOYO Deluxe Crunch that is pretty good

I thought I lost it (along with a Decimator II) so I bought another Decimator II from my buddy

A few months ago I found my Deluxe Crunch and the other Decimator II

Solid:

caline englishman
caline pure sky (had at the same time as the MXR timmy, they sounded pretty damn close. sold both)
mooer pure octave (for the one very specific sound I got it for at least)

Instant garbage:
donner noise killer
donner square verb

The mooer octave is the only one I still have

Demon FX King of Drive - I've never played a real King of Tone, but this pedal sounds great and is made very well.
Demon FX Freedman sounds pretty damn close to the Friedman pedal
Nux Tape Echo really nice cheaper alternative to a Space Echo
From what I have heard, a lot of the Nux and Demon FX stuff is pretty good

Mosky XP Booster, a clone of the Xotic EP Booster.

Joyo Vintage Overdrive, a TS clone

Caline Englishman, another mention for this Plexitone clone.

i have a joyo sweet baby i like a lot and use all the time, and time to time use a caline pure sky. i got em to try the circuits, cause why pay $200+ to get a taste of the real thing and hate it? funny enough-- it's on three years of use for both of em... and they still work fine.

Yes, that is the same pedal as the Kokko Overdrive I mentioned on the OP, just rebranded. It is is indeed a great TS clone.

some that come to mind:
Boss sd1 -classic and works great as a workhorse quality drive pedal.

TC mojo mojo - some times have on board as extra gain boost/sustain boost and seems to work well for that.

Caline englishman - cool marshally cheap pedal has lot of output and wide range of gain available. Haevn't used it on pedal board much but is cool pedal.

JRR Pedals, Janice is a a surprisingly excellent pedal.
It's a Vemuran Jan Ray Clone, which is a Timmy clone... however, the Janice has extra knobs and a boost, that make it more flexible.
If you're into Timmy pedals, the Janice is totally worth the $50.00.
I think it's better than a real Timmy.
