Just messing about Evh el34 100 watt blue chan
Wanted to hear sumthin with my "new" mic setup. Again its the beyerdynamic 201 with the Shirt sm7b running thru a couple Neve preamps.. This really is about as raw as I leave em five its basically on point from the get go.. No 57 harshness to try and tame a bit.. The blue on this amp has a great old thrash tone straight in... Real punchy and tight... Made this up 10 minutes before recording and the ending I pretty much just made up as I recorded the first guitar.. So its definitely falling apart there but the goal was already accomplished!

Re: Just messing about Evh el34 100 watt blue chan
yeah man this is killer!!!! I'm pretty sure the 100W EL34 EVH will be my next big purchase. Even though these clips are a completely different style from what I play, I can hear the modded plexi character in this amp but also with some modern 5150 character mixed in. Given that Marshall and 5153s are my favorite tones these days, this amp is the culmination of it all

That's awesome man!!! Congratulations!!!
As for the 50w sounding like the 100w, nott really but it's a really cool amp anyway. Do the C137 mod for the blue channel. It takes a second and makes a big difference especially if you want to play metal with it.

Now you have me listening on my phone! Haha
Sounds all right I think, but yeah never criticize just from phone!!!

Eh, kinda. I don’t have a set spot. I put on my headphones and just listen and check phase, since I’m usejng 2 mics, so I’ll move the mics to get the least amount of cancellation, so they change depending on the other mic..
As far as the 50 sounding like the hundred, the red channels are in the same ballpark, but the tone in this clip especially you will NOT get with the 50. The blue on the 50 is way different. Not saying it can’t be used to great results, but you won’t get this type of tone
thanks man.GuitarBilly wrote:yeah man this is killer!!!! I'm pretty sure the 100W EL34 EVH will be my next big purchase. I’m trying to think if you’d really dig this. I think so, but the blue, which I used hear straight in, can be dialed to be more “woody” like I hear this, by scooping the mids. Which I did. With mids up it’s much more upfront Marshall and it does have some saturation. On recordings it usually sounds like more than I get in the room but the blue is basically geared for all kinds of rock and less gainy metal. Even with the gain low it has gain. It won’t be a clean sound if the gain is turned down, but it has a nice sweep from crunchy pushed 800 to hot rod 800 and then some

Thanks! I used to want to be like hetfield, nowadays I want to play like endtime lol. That’s the mod you just clip the resistor? What exactly does that do?

Capacitor not resistor

It takes the woofiness off of the blue channel. Other channels remain the same.

Yeah I've been using the 6L6 50w a lot lately and I pretty much live on the blue channel except for some lead shit where I switch to red. But rhythm guitar is all blue.
I love the way it sounds but I do miss the extra girth you get from a 100w power amp and I also miss the feel of EL34s. Both of which the EL34 100w solves well.
Your clips are way heavier than anything I'd ever play but there's a certain character that I hear in them that is very much the classic Marshall tone. Which is hard to explain, but I definitely recognize when I hear it. It's not only about having EL34s because with Marshalls, even when you load them with 6550s that character is still there.
And I've heard many EL34 amps that miss the mark by a lot. There is definitely something about the right voicing that not every amp maker gets it right.
But the 5153s in general have the right character in their preamp, in part probably because of how Eddie heard things, and it seems like the EL34 100w version is the perfect culmination of this amp since the power section is also correct, which is more of a feel thing but it definitely makes a difference.

Sick tones dude. Definitely has that woody, bouncy plexi tone that matches well with your playing. I've said it before, but it's like if EVH decided to play thrash metal lol. Lively is the best word I can think of.

Yeah it’s a really great amp.
And the blue of the fifty 6l6 is good too, the 100el34 is STILL a bit more of it own beast to my ears. Could be simply the bigger power section and el34s, but also the el34 hundred is also then”Stealth” so it had those same mods to the preamp which add that slight bit “crack” in the upper mids that with the el34 definitely bring that Marshall vibe for sure
