What's vintage these days?
I've always thought vintage were 50s/60s and maybe some early 70s for the traditional brands.
Then some 80s for guitars like San Dimas Charvels, early Jacksons, Hamers etc, there's definitely collector's value there.
Other than that, it's just used, no?
I've been seeing the term vintage being applied to a lot of instruments that I wouldn't consider vintage.
To give an example close to home, at my last gig, a guitar player from another band called my 78 Les Paul a "vintage guitar". He meant it in a very complimentary way so I didn't argue, but honestly I don't see my Les Paul as a vintage guitar, just old/used.
What do you guys think? Is there still a consensus on vintage or it's pretty much whatever you want it to be these days?

Re: What's vintage these days?
I think it’s 25 years.. Maybe 30. But yeah plenty label some 90s guitars as vintage..
Not to me… But I can go back to the 80s and start thinking vintage. 35+ years for an instrument is getting up there to me

Re: What's vintage these days?
In the world of collector cars, it's 20 years to he considerd vintage and 25 for antique status. A five year diff between the two is kind of stupid though.
Re: What's vintage these days?
1978 is already 45 years ago. I would probably classify that as vintage. I also always thought it was 25 years in general...music to be considered classic, instruments to be called vintage. But where the fuck did I hear that? No fucking clue lolol. Some homeless guy on the street could've said it for all I know.

Re: What's vintage these days?
I've always thought of 50's and 60's being considered vintage. To me, the 70's stuff was just old and wasn't really desirable. About 5 years I listed a 1969 Hofner 12 string acoustic on Craiglist and listed it as vintage and someone who emailed me about it laughed about me calling it vintage. So I don't really know.
What made me laugh recently was seeing some mid 90's piece of shit import car with an Arizona Historic plate on it, that cracked me up.

I think he was laughing about calling a Hofner vintage, not the year. Although I disagree, Hofners can definitely be vintage guitars, I mean, The Beatles used them, come on.
I do have a Historic plate on my car, but it's because here in MD once you switch the registration to Historic, you're exempt from emissions tests every 2 years. So yeah I'll take that, thank you very much. There's a mileage limit that you can drive it every years, I don't know what it is, I don't drive much anyway since I don't commute to work.

Well, that's true. It's technically a Suzuki Vitara. Geo and Chevy are just rebranding. The engine block has the Suzuki name and logo engraved in it so they're not even hiding it.

I rode in that tracker last August lol.
I guess by the 25 year definition, I would be too haha. But you got 6 years on me! Not too far off in the grand scheme of things, I guess.

Re: What's vintage these days?
Guitar Center just told me yesterday that the line is at 1997, right now.
Re: What's vintage these days?
Oh Billy, I consider you vintage and I'm sure you are younger than me.
It's a tough call as to what is and what isn't vintage. I feel anything pre '90 as that would be over 30 years old. Also matters a lot based on numbers made and stuff obviously when trying to place value on something. In the 80's a 60's strat or LP was vintage to me and that was only 10-15 years older.
