Peavey XXX 40?

Post by spawnofthesith »

Are these worth a damn at all? Looks a bit stripped down from the full sized head

There's a combo at my local used shop for $200. Seems kind of stupid cheap for a tube combo that sounds even halfway good

They appear to have sold on reverb for between $350-750 over the last 6 months :idk:
Guitars: 2018 Gibson Les Paul Standard | Fender American Pro II Stratocaster | PRS S2 Mccarty 594 | PRS S2 Vela Semihollow | PRS CU-22 | PRS CE24 semihollow

It's a cool sounding amp. Not stripped down, all the 3 channels of the head are there, for $200 it's a non brainer.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

It looks like only 2 channels? Unless one of those is shared controls but only sqitchable with a FS?

Interesting. First time I've seen this one.

The one I've always seen/played is this one:

I didn't know they had a 2 channel version.

The 3 channel version is still like the full head. I think they're still 120 watts, too? I don't remember.

I think the 2 channel was 40 watts and had some built in FX or some bullshit? I might be thinking of something else. But yeah, should still be great. $200 is fucking retarded if you don't buy it.

EDIT: Nope, the regular 112 had 2 6l6s.

Also, they did make a 40/EFX, but this doesn't appear to be that. The FX control panel is missing.

THe MF page for it looks wrong too haha.

There is a XXX 40 and a XXX 40 FX. I've owned two of the FX versions. Crunch was a watered down version of the XXX head. Ultra was similar to the XXX head crunch.

Yeah I'll probably try and grab this. Busy week so I may not be able to make it over there til the weekend and will grab it for sure if they still have it. Looks like they posted it online yesterday.

It's funny because I do cruise CL most days, but peavey is basically never one of my search terms, but this past weekend I was chit chatting with the homie recording our EP and he was speaking pretty highly of his XXX, and I know endtime and others have always had good things to say. Low and behold I see this

This seems like it would be a nice grab and go alternative to my deluxe reverb and pedals for JAWA stuff, considering the type of high gain we roll

I don't really care about about crunch/mid gain sounds. at least not on this amp if I got it lol. Can the crunch channel pull off a passable no break up clean?

I'd hit it for $200, I had always wanted to pick up one of the heads when you could find them all day on Craigslist for under $500. Might be cool to convert that to a small head and run through a 4x12

The head was good at that no break up clean, but from the 10 seconds I remember trying that on the 40 XXX.......

Welp, I'm gonna do a thorough demo before making a decision. We'll see how I feel

not a lot of videos or evidence these ever even existed on youtube, but I thought I was able to discern some deent clean and high gain through the crummy vids I did find :idk:

You got me thinking, so I looked thru my own youtube channel. And of course there are no XXX 40 vids to back up anything I just said.

120w Head, 212 combo, full featured.
60w 112 combo, same as above.
40w 112 combo, two versions, one with digital effects. I'm curious what the rhythm or crunch channel can sound like on these smaller amps. Get it and get some clips.
All combos have reverb.

when i had the head, i liked the Crunch channel with a boost more than the Ultra.

you could use 6L6 or EL34 tubes in the head - Gary Holt of Exodus did the Tempo Of The Damned album with EL34's in it, and Shovel-Headed Kill Machine with 6L6's if i remember right.

not sure if the combos allow different tubes ... ?

$100 is a score! Even $200 is one of those deals you just buy it and worry about if its good or not later.

Hell yeah, that's more than a steal, highway robbery!

Can't wait to hear how it sounds, there was one on Craigslist semi local to me and it's enticing but I need another amp like I need a hole in the head.

I have my red stripe studio pro and revolution at home but want a tube combo for the bedroom.
