Breakdown core

Post by Steinmetzify »

I became aware of this about ten minutes ago.

Intro? Fuck you
Verse? Go fuck yourself away
Chorus? Fuck off
2nd verse? we didn't do a 1st one, what's the point of a 2nd which would technically be a 1st? Fuck that
Lyrics? Bite my dick loser, I'm screaming unintelligible gibberish here fuck you

Don't get me wrong. I love metal, particularly late 90s/00s metal and I love a great breakdown....when the riff hits harder and slower and it just adds to the song.

This is an ENTIRE genre of metal that's just a breakdown with people screaming over it, the songs are sub 3 minutes long and there are multiple bands doing this.

I get that it's a new generation and most kids these days can't even pay attention to THIS shit let alone a 9 minute older Metallica song, but JFC this makes me feel really really old...

I'm going to post this on RT and watch the really old guys just slowly melt down over the weekend lol

Whale farts didn’t start and peak til ‘09-‘12

Golden era of deathcore was around 06-08

Idk the bands in the OP and haven’t listened to the vids but I’m guessing it’s along the lines of black breath and shit was a resurgence of making the songs basically only the most slow gnarly breakdowns as possibly

I had never heard of this style before. I like the Thrown song. It had some elements of old school east coast hardcore, especially the vocals.
The other band I wasn't crazy about.

But I can see how this gets old really fast. The whole point of a breakdown is to be a change of pace for a faster song. If the whole song is a breakdown that's a bit of a problem lol

But that band Thrown, I can hear some good influences there. It will be interesting to see how their music evolves.

It's metal for the ADHD crowd. They don't have the patience to wait for the cool part of the song, so the bands are trying to make every part the cool part, which ends up just being meh for somebody that enjoys some music with their music.

More power to 'em, but ain't really my bag.

I mean that's what every band/songwriter should aspire for. Every part of a song being cool is not a bad thing. But it's also not the same thing as every part being a breakdown

Thrown and Dealer are both great.

I'll add Ten56 to that mix. Just ignorant and heavy.

To me, this stuff is like the evolution of numetal and deathcore, kinda smashing together. I love it.... but it wears me out fast. Like, I'm good for one song once in a while, but never for an extended listen. I just don't have all ten middle fingers anymore...but I always loved music that was heavy enough to make me laugh. Same way I felt in the mid-2000's when I first heard SYL.

I will say that these bands are an absolute RIOT live. Just insane. I recently saw Spite, Left To Suffer, and Oceano... and while these aren't bands I'd actively listen to, they're a blast to watch.

So I made a playlist and been bumping this all weekend; I don’t hate it.

I don’t love it but I don’t hate it.

Certain moods etc and it’s awesome.

Some of em are way too short; get into the groove and bam, song over.

After some thought I think it’s kind of neat lol

Do your 2 1/2 minute breakdown songs you guys. More power to you, at least you’re playing music.

Listen to early Hatebreed and Throwdown, they actually have songs based around mosh parts not just riff salad

I've been poo pooing these style bands for a couple years now. I'm calling it Lorna Shorecore, because it's all basically derivative of that band or its influences. We have gone through this many times before. Metallica/Slayer, Pantera, Slipknot, Killswitch, Periphery, and now this. It just is what it is.

One band I really do enjoy from this genre is Paleface. Fuck...it's just raw and caveman'y in the right ways. Take a detuned guitar through a recto slammed with a tube screamer and viola!

But, mostly, it's not my bag. YMMV
