War Movies

Post by Bonano »

I saw "Hamburger Hill" and didn't see what all the fuss was about. Maybe I have to see it again.

Off the top of my head, these are my favorites:
American Sniper
Saving Private Ryan
Glory
Thin Red Line

War-related:
Taking Chance

Lot of good ones already mentioned, I will also add the 2022 version of All Quiet on the Western Front, I have not seen the 1930 or 1979 versions, but heard those are good too.

Not a movie, but Band of Brothers is my all time favorite. Watch it every year.

Enemy at the Gates like Rumpleforeskin said. Badass movie.

Recently, 1917, Dunkirk, Hacksaw Ridge and All Quiet on the new All Quiet on the Western Front, although I enjoy the one with Ernest Borgnine because my grandpa would get into it and start talking about his war experience (obviously not WWI).

Oh, now that you mention Band of Brothers, when I was on leave for my firstborn, I watched another series called Generation Kill. I think I watched it more because I was home all day than because it was great. I binged a lot of shows then. Unheard of.

Isn't "The Pacific" kinda like BoB?

Yes but everything that BoB gets right tithe Pacific gets wrong.

Do documentaries count? All of Ken Burns' war docs are amazing with The Civil War the best of the bunch. Vietnam is a close second.

If I get a vote, documentaries are included.

When I was growing up I heard the casualty counts from Walter Cronkite every night, so the Vietnam series was incredibly interesting to me. I'd like to see it from another vantage point to weigh historical accuracy vs opinion, but I think it gets a lot of things right...

I was excited for The Pacific only to be extremely let down. It felt like a romance movie with bits and pieces of war peppered in. The acting also couldn’t compete with the cast of BoB.

Good call on Ken Burns’ stuff! All of his stuff is well done. Loved The Civil War.

Speaking of which, Gettysburg was another good one. I remember watching it in the mid ‘90s and being blown away as a kid that the guy from Dumb and Dumber could be such a good serious actor.
