iMac out of CPU power WTF? Problem solved!!!!

Post by ajaxlepinski »

I refuse to upgrade and pay a subscription fee for ProTools12.
Upgrading would force me to upgrade my Mac's OS.
If I upgrade, I will lose about $2k in plugins that won't run on the newer Mac OS and/or won't run on PT12.
PT10 does a fine job and plugins are still available for my set up.... so, fuck it, why upgrade?

Last week, PT started glitching up and then, it finally locked up with this error message: "A CPU overload has occurred, try increasing the buffer in the playback engine or removing plugins. - 6101".
Well, even with only one track and no plugins running, it kept locking up as soon as I ht PLAY.

There are lots of "solutions", for this error message, all over the web that don't work.

It took about an hour, of online searching, to find the correct solution and now, everything is running better than ever! WOOO HOOO!!!!!
It turns out that I just have to turn off a function/app called, "Spotlight" and turn it back on when I'm done using PT... easy peasy.

Thanks bro!

My Mac was always glitching up whenever I had more than 4 or 5 plugins running at the same time.
I though it was that I didn't spend enough money on RAM... I only have 16 gigs.
I ran 8 plugins the other night and everything is running noticeably faster, smoother especially, when I make changes to the plugins on the fly.
No more glitches at all! I'm really happy!!!

Also, for some reason, I was able to upload Google Chrome - couldn't do that before.
Because, my OS is out of date, so is Safari and I wasn't able to visit a lot of websites.... now I can with Chrome! Wooot!!!! :rawk:

Sounds like if it isn't a necessary program, then it should just go all together.

From what I understand, Spotlight is used to index and identify system files. So, it is necessary to some extent.
It's really easy to turn on and off... it literally takes less than 15 seconds so, no biggy....

HOWEVER, it's getting more difficult to find plugins that work on 32bit ProTools and Mac 10.8.5.
I tried to download Eventide MicroPitch today... Don't Crack's website said it was available in 32/64bits for Mac but, after paying, the download only came in 64bit for Mac.
I opened a Job Ticket with Don't Crack and 30 min later, they removed the 32bit option from their advertisement.... waiting to hear about my credit.

I'm getting tired of Apple's frequent OS. They have too many major OS updates that make plugins obsolete. It may be time to switch to windows and screw Mac.
Mac used to be cool.

The problem with any Apple product is that it's a frequent buyers club. You gotta keep feeding the machine, or the machine leaves you behind.

Have you looked into building a hackintosh with more recent (PC-based) hardware and the older OS? You might be better served doing something like this, or possibly pick up a spare used mac (or two) for donor parts if this is going to be a long-term resistance to the assimilation.

Good luck, Brian. Forced software/hardware obsolescence is a bitter pill, and I've swallowed plenty of them.

Thanks G. :hi5:
Man, building a hackintosh sounds like a good idea... I just have too many projects and life-thingys going on to get into it.
I think I may just upgrade my Mac to the latest OS and get the newest version of ProTools.
I have some homework to do but, if the new version of PT can run my current PT recording files, I'll upgrade. If not, I'm definitely switching to PC.

Ultimately...

Just posting to let everyone know that I got my credit from Don't Crack.
They sent me a nice email explaining that it was their error listing the plugin as 32/64 bit, when it was really only 64 bit.

Don't Crack ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!! :rawk: :rawk: :rawk: :rawk: :rawk:
