Looking For A New Mic

Post by maggotspawn »

I'm kind of looking for something new, as far as mic's go. I have 2 AT2020's, 2 SM57's, 2 Audix I5's.
And a CAD drum mic set, which came with 2 CM 217 SDC's, which are surprisingly good on acoustic guitar. Where to go from here? Inexpensive ribbon perhaps? Not much happening here as far as vocals, but you never know. The AT4050 has my interest, so something in that price range. Used is fine.

Probably mostly guitar amps, but having something that worked for vocals or other stuff would be a plus.

a ribbon's a bomber thing to have, but so is a multipattern condenser. i almost never record guits with dynamics having a bunch of both, and my 57 does what it does best... holds doors open or pounds nails. :D

i kid, course... but there's a buncha good cascade ribbons. i'll still recommend a cad m179 as one of the best and affordable all purpose mics there are for most folks. it aint fancy-- but it's a solid all rounder, and i use my three like most folks use 57's. pads, multipatterns, bass rolloffs, shockmounts- generally flat and character free.. but i throw 'em on drum overheads and kick, guitar amps close and far, i've used em on bass cabs, vocals.. acoustic instruments, whatever. all useful and generally good sounding.

Yeah, the SM57 isn't my favorite. I'll look into that CAD, thanks.

EndTime was raving about his new/used Audio Technica ATM250DE. It's a Condensor and dynamic mic in one: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=43573&hilit=ATM250DE
NinjaRaf just bought one too: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=43645&hilit=ATM250DE

The ATM250De had been discontinued but, they're available used, on Reverb.
Audio Technica sells a new verstion, the AE2500 https://www.audio-technica.com/cms/wire ... index.html

I'd personally grab a used C414. Its an amazing workhorse condenser. I use it on almost everything.

The ATM250DE arrived this past Saturday and I only had a chance to plug it in to see if it worked... and I'm happy to say, "It does!"
My only surprise was that, the mic has 5 pins (instead of three) and it came with a special Y cable.... 1ea. 5 pin XLR -to- 2ea. standard 3 pin XLR
I was expecting to use a regular XLR cable and I ass-u-me-d that the mic did some kind of mixing voodoo, combining the condenser and the dynamic, all on it's own.
Didn't expect to have to use two inputs on my A/D converter. I mean, geesh... I could just tape two mics together!
This thing had better be the cat's meow or, I'ma gunna sell this dang dern fancy thing real quick! :cop:

So you're mad cause you have two inputs to allow you to fully control your sound? Lol..

But yeah, I encourage you to tape two mics together and see how that goes for you

Oh, relax... I'm just f'n around. I'll put the thumb screws on it and write a real report.
I'm not saying it's a bad mic...
I'm just disappointed that there weren't any Keebler elves inside doing a mix.

But, seriously... isn't taping two mics together basically what they did? Howzit different?
I mean, I should read the manual (and their advertising) to see if they offer an explanation, but I don't see much difference. :idk:
Still, for $200, I got an interesting and useful mic.

I would assume the pair is phase aligned (physically and electrically) - but beyond that, yeah, pretty much like taping two mics together.

The Dead used to do it all the time - although they did it for ambient nose reduction.

ambient noise reduction?
they were to stop the feedback from the massive speaker array behind them

yes - to only keep the vocals for the mic - and to stop the stage volume from bleeding through.
