Graph Tech Un-Lock nut

Post by GuitarBilly »

This is supposed to be a drop-in replacement for Floyd locking nuts and claims to offer the same stability. Which is a tall order, but Graph Tech is known for making good stuff. What do you guys think?

I'm glad that someone is doing something like this in case I want to use some of my floyd rigged necks on a non-floyd body. But I wouldn't take a floyd nut off to use this and keep the bridge the same. I like the wheel just fine...

Why is it installed on what I assume to be a Les Paul neck? I would not cut away material to install and it looks a lot longer than a standard LP nut.

I’m trying to understand how this truly works. I got the gist of it but I’m failing to see how this will be superior? Or even as good as a locking nut.

Unless I'm missing something, it looks like this nut allows the stings to freely slide back and forth? Which I might like on all my hard tail guitars.

I have zero need for this but it's interesting for sure. I will wait for some reviews. By looks alone have doubts this will keep the strings in the slots on a good dive bomb.

I saw this yesterday and don’t understand either…it says it’s to be paired with locking tuners, so maybe the free movement of the nut reduces binding and the locking happens at the tuners? Could be cool but I think they need to explain it better for dum dums like me…

I don't see how adding more friction at the nut is going to be better than a locking nut or a well-filed standard nut with a straight pull to locking tuners. I'm far from a traditionalist, but something about that layout screams physics fail to me.

It is less tension. The force is spread out over a much greater area = less tension, plus a slippery material to match.

I know a guy that decided to go away from a locking nut to just locking tuners a few years back. Had a custom bone nut cut. The only issue he had was that when you really slammed the bar to full dive bombing antics, the strings could unseat themselves from the nut. He eventually had a second nut cut that was taller than the first and had deeper grooves to help keep them returning to the correct place.

I think the design of this nut with the conical/funnel shape is probably to account for the same issue and bind less with the angle to the tuners as well.

I think it's a killer idea. If I had Floyd loaded guitars I would have already ordered. I despise the extra hassle of the Floyd at string changes, tuning, setup time. For my needs, a modern trem like the gotoh 510 and locking tuners has done a decent job of staying in tune. I don't dive them to full slack or flutter or anything too extreme though.

Yeah it's not available yet but I'll definitely try one when it's out.

I'm usually skeptical about this kind of thing, but everything I've bought from Grapth Tech has been great. They're not a snake oil company. So I'm sure this was well thought out and tested. And if I send up not liking it's only $30.

I’d like to put this on my Schecter. Would be cool to not have to lock the strings at the nut. I have run out of fine tuning before because of the locking nut
