So, I have having a LOT of trouble getting a good, crisp tight metal tone out of my cab and a Mesa Triaxis/2:90. I started with center cone, 1" off and it just has no life. The bottom end is there, fairly tight. But, the mid voicing is terrible. We have a Mesa cab with 30s in it which we have no issue getting monster tone out of but no such luck with the 75s. Personally I don't stress too much about mic placement, just find a good bright spot, about a fingers width away from the grille. Then tweak the amp so that what comes out the studio monitors sounds good. You may end up with very strange settings, but the sound is what's important, right?

Without arguing over which is better, the V30 and T75 are pretty damn different in their EQ signature. The 75 is going to have a lot less mids no matter what you do unless you really make up for it hard at the amp.

Do you like what you hear when you put your head down at speaker level on that cab?

What mic are you using?

My favorite mic on T75s is a sennheiser md 421 - it always seems to take less time to find the sweet spot.

The 75 can be a bit tough to zero in on the sweet spot, but I still find I like it best towards the edge of the dust cap, not too much different than where I end up on a V30. I just find that I don't have to be as precise with the placement on a V30, whereas a 75 has me with the headphones on nudging the the mic around infinitesimal amounts. Too close to the center and it gets too harsh and ice picky, too close to the cone and it gets too indistinct. You can get some good tones out of them though, just don't expect it to sound like a V30 because they're drastically different. You have to make the 75's signature sound work for you. I like them for a really crunchy Marshall-based hard rock sound...I always think of some of the tones on the first Danzig album, for instance.

totally depends on the mic, the tone, the room, and the mix.

if you're using a 57- point the mic at the floor and leave the interface unplugged.

if you're using something else (okay.. or even a 57), move it around and see. there isn't really a readily transferrable 'do all' solution- you gotta mess with it.

Moving a mic closer or further away is like adjusting the focus on binoculars. With a 75 your going to want to start at least a fist away from the speaker and about 2 inches off center . As you move it away you will pick up more of the overall sound of the speaker and eventually the cab and room. Since t75's have less mids a really close mic setting will chop off some frequencies. Once you've got it aproximated then use the pre-amp to finish the job.
