Beloved Pieces of Guitar Music That You Hate

I was driving in to work today and flipped the channel to one of Salt Lake City's 341 "Classic Rock That REALLY Rocks" stations, just in time to hear the long coda to "Layla."

God, I hate that thing. It goes nowhere for like three full minutes. It sounds like someone recorded the first take of them fucking around, without even knowing the chord progression yet, and printed it to tape. It's hard to believe that's a prime Duane Allman and a near-prime Eric Clapton. I've never been so glad to hear two guitarists buried behind a piano in my life.

Yet it frequently crops up on lists of "greatest guitar solos ever."

Any of you have any other renowned/beloved guitar works that you can't stand? Or just want to take me to school for hating "Layla?" :bring:

The "Note" that Jimi plays in the live version of Machine Gun.

It's not the note that I hate. Just all the asshattery and endless commentary about it. Like it's impossible or something.

Crank your Marshall, boost it and maybe add some compression/sustain. Done

I can a let a note hang long enough to make a pot of coffee with that setup.

Just get over it.

Cliffs of Dover. Hate it.

And I hate practically everything that Satch has ever done. Maybe he can play, but he can't write a damned non-boringasfuck song to save his life.

Layla is the shit. Duane playing above the pickups is classic as fuck. But I see what you're getting at. :D

I have to think on this for a minute. I'm a critical bastard so I know there is something out there that is loved and that I hate with a passion.

American Pie
Cheesburger in Paradise (actually most Jimmy Buffet stuff causes me physical pain)

Both played constantly by my old college roommates at ever chance they could - if I hear them to this day I want to vomit.

I live in the center of the sailing/yachty douchebag universe.

It's THE most predictable crowd I've ever seen. More so than the UFC Tapout/Rap-Rock idiots.

When one approaches the Jukebox, you know it's going to start with Jimmy Buffet or Coldplay.

The local bartenders dread the middle of May when they all start showing up. They tip well, but the money comes at a steep price.

I'm glad I don't drink anymore.

I have another: the extended outro to "Free Bird."

Oh congratulations, Allen! You know ALL the pentatonic shapes! :loon:

That solo is what Ace Frehley would have played if Gene and Paul let him keep going after 16 bars.

I  the unaccompanied intro. It gets me all fired up every time, then about 15 seconds after the full band kicks in, I remember "Oh yeah, the rest of this song sounds like a beer commercial."

Not to rub salt in the wound, but if you ever get a chance to watch this documentary, it is fascinating.

Yeah, that's just a snipet from the doc, but the whole documentary is really well done, IMO.

I want to take you somewhere for hating Layla, but I don't think school is the place.

Layla is awesome, and the outro is my favorite part, so you shut you dirty little whore mouth

It's even better live. outro starts at 3:30

Anything Guns & Roses
Most any 80's hairspray douche baggery (I DO have a FEW exceptions)
Most anything by The Eagles.
Anything George Jones. I'd rather eat glass than hear his voice :puke"
Anything Janice Joplin. Nails on a chalk board is more pleasant.

As for Layla, the only time I care to hear it is while watching Goodfellas.

Dont care much for post-Cream Clapton.

Behold. Someone that's never smoke weed.

My biggest gripe: Hendrix. I dislike him because he's overhyped, just like every other guitarist that died young. I don't understand how he's considered the "greatest." Can someone explain how he's MUSICALLY considered the greatest guitarist?

I reading everyone's examples and it just becomes clear to me that I simply love rock guitar. Sure, there's some that I don't care for too much... but I don't hate any guitar music I don't think....

oh wait. I hate the guitar tone of almost all Beatles songs. But that's tone... not playing.

He moved the guitar to a place where it had not gone before. Shit like this you really got to put in the context of the time it occurred. If you were born in 1983 (I was) and grew up with a bunch of dudes shredding around you, ya, Hendrix probably won't seem all that special. But what he did no one did before, and thats fucking awesome. :idk:

When I was 15, I had every Pink Floyd album and a color laser show in my bedroom. I'd listen to Meddle, Saucerful of Secrets, Obscured by Clouds, Animals, Atom Heart Mother and the More soundtrack. I just don't like the Wall, never have never will. And I think that Dark Side of the moon is overplayed and overrated compared to the other albums. Oh and you're an idiot.
