List your favorite 2nd guitarist

Post by jnurp »

So many bands have two guitarists and theres always a superstar lead player and the "other" guy. name some of those other guys that you like.

Malcolm comes to mind first, his riffs are the backbone of that band.

Izzy Stradlin, does anybody even remember that he exists?

Growing up I always loved Ratt and robin Crosby was definitely the other guy. I don't know if he could play but he lived in the shadow of warren.

When Izzy left G&F'nR, even Slash commented that they couldn't ever figure out just what the hell Izzy was playing all those years.

Rhythm genius. Along with Steven Adler.

After they left, it was over for G&F'nR.

I don't really count him as the "second" guitarist since he wrote the best material, but Hanneman.

Brad Whitford instantly comes to mind. Dude is a badass

Also +1 on wondering wtf purpose Izzy Stradlin served. I always forget he was even in the band

I came in thinking about Izzy. He helped write a lot of the songs didn't he? Pretty sure he a was pretty integral part of the band but its been awhile since I brushed up on my GnR history.

Yeah, Kerry is/was definitely the louder, more visible personality, but Hanneman probably wrote eight of my ten favorite Slayer songs. :rawk:

That's the thing. They didn't even realize how important he was to their sound until he was gone. Go back and listen, really listen to Appetite. The real genius of that album has little to do with Slash. He overdubbed all his solos. The real flavor on that album is Izzy all the way. He and Steven Adler knew how to interact perfectly.

Gilby Clark was no Izzy Stradlin.

See, this is the problem with most of the bands I've listened to for long enough to really have an opinion about. You can't call Scott Ian and Jeff Hanneman seconds guitarists unless you want to refer to James Hetfield as a second guitarist, and somehow we intrinsicly know that's not right.

EDIT:  Ninja'd. ^^

KK Downing is a badass. I love how much wildness and attitude are in his leads as compared to the slicker, more perfect Tipton leads.

Well, now that Ian and Spitz have both been named in the thread, I guess they cancel out. :D

Woodroe Weatherman.

MONSTER guitar player who gets very little recognition. Dude's got a super cool vibrato. Lots of tasty licks.

Eric Peterson. It is his rock-solid foundation that allows Skolnik to do what he does.

when was marty ever the 2nd option? even with cocophony I wouldn't say he was #2 even though Jason was infinitely more creative and talented than him back then.

Mustaine was center stage, song writer and it was his band. Marty was clearly the main lead guitarist.

I don't know if I can count Jon Schaffer since he's the main guy of the band, but as the rhythm guitarist, I would say him. Some of his stuff is tiring to play.

Karl Sanders. Nile's amazing, but he's got C cups.
