This Year In Metal

This year has been so promising for metal albums so far. It gives me a big thrashy boner.
Revocation - Revocation
Skeletonwitch - Serpents Unleashed
The Black Dahlia Murder - Everblack
Arsis - Unwelcome
Carcass - Surgical Steel
Protest The Hero - Volition
6 absolutely SOLID albums. Show me what else you've got.
Honorable mention to Fleshgod Apocalypse - Labyrinth because, while awesome, it's just very typical and nothing exciting. Really worth a listen though, but if you've heard Agony, you won't be surprised.
It's too bad Trivium pussied out with Vengeance Falls. They really did top out with Shogun and I know some people will say they're not worth the hype, but they're so ridiculously talented and admittedly my guilty pleasure in terms of fandom, along with Steel Panther.

Actual song starts at 0:58

Apparently funny videos are the common theme.

Yeah I've been liking this years crop haha.
Last year was great too though.
Gojira, Meshuggah, and LOG.
The new PTH is hands down my favorite metal album of the year so far though.
I like most of the other albums you mentioned but PTH really fucking nailed it with this one.

Volition is amazing. I'm glad the album mix wasn't as vocal heavy as the demo, but the bass is still too buried because it's so tasty. I don't like Life Embossed because I like politics to stay away from my metal, though the riffs are fucking on point.
Indeed. Wintersun, BTBAM, Abiotic, HAARP Machine, Loomis, Faceless (I know a lot of people didn't like Autotheism, but it's amazing)
I previously forgot Holy Grail and others, I'm sure.

Not really into any of this stuff.
Exivious just released their new album the other day. Only listened to it a couple of times so far, but it seemed pretty damn good to me.

That Witherscape tune is great. I'll be checking them out.
I hadn't heard the new Exivious. It's excellent from what I'm listening to.

Yeah I've only listened to it a couple of times on the computer coz I can't be arsed plugging in the iPod. Otherwise I'd probably have listened to it non-stop the last couple of days. Definitely still Exivious, but also different to the debut album.
Also kinda looking forward to seeing the artwork when the CD turns up.

This is amazing!
Thanks for the new music, guys. I was in a Best of 2013 thread on the metal subreddit, but it might as well be called r/blackmetal.

If you're not familiar with them, it's Dan Swanö's new band (of Edge of Sanity and Nightingale fame).

This album is absolutely sick

August burns Red - Rescue and Restore
Also this is a little more post hardcore then metal, but this band never fails to put out really good shit. This might be one of their best.

Silverstein - This is How the Wind Shifts
We came as romans also put out a new record that I've been digging

You know what? I loved Ultra-Violence and Act III; but I cannot for the life of me get into any Death Angel stuff past that time period. I really don't know why. It's not like I view them with elitist goggles; they just always seem to have a rock vibe that I don't care for; no matter how "metal" they are trying to be. I dug the experimentation on Act III (and some of Frolic...); but new stuff just does nothing for me. Not to be hater

; I dig most of the old guard

So far, my two favorite metal releases from this year have been Deafheaven's Sunbather (not exactly metal for some purists but close enough for me) and Red Fang's Whales and Leeches

I love that these dudes are still around. Somewhere I have their original demo, a cassette tape, obviously copied by hand onto one of those old clear-cased tapes, the "cover" a piece of blue-green construction paper that was run through a copier with spotty black artwork and sounding like something recorded in a garage, MAYBE using four separate tracks. The music was incredible though. You could just feel the quality in the composition and playing, even if the packaging was sorta lulzy. That had to have been before '92, because I remember listening to it driving to High School.
DAMN that new tune brings the rock.
