NO BRAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy Carp!!! Was on the hi-way, Friday, and I hit the brakes and the pedal went to the floor, The bells in the dash went off and I felt flush with fear. On the exit I tried the emer. brake and heard a big clunk and the fear doubled. I pushed the brake pedal onto the floor, downshifted to 2nd( its an auto) and was able to stop the truck.
Truck is a one ton utility cab with a 9' utility box on it. Limped home the back way and got it into the driveway. Tore into it and found mucho destruction. Rotors- gone. Pads- way gone. EM brakes- gone.
Lots of weight on that truck. Calendar marked for next year to check pads.
I think I was lucky not having an accident.
Brake pads went down so far, the caliper piston blew out and all the brake fluid with it.

You THINK you were lucky? You were man! Damn that'd be scary as hell!
Glad everyone is ok. Hopefully its a work truck and you don't have to pay for all that? (And the eventual new transmission it'll now need....

)
Seriously though, glad you got through that safely!

Yep-its a work truck. And its my worktruck. I am the biz owner. And, right now, its my only vehicle. Will call the neighbor this AM for a ride to get parts and have a mechanic lined up for this PM. In my dirt driveway.

Also, having to juggle some work around.
Power company should be setting a pole on a job today, and I need to set a temp service on it for power.
Couldn't have been crappier timing

Damn man. Lucky indeed, glad you're ok.
That happened to me last year when my brake fluid was low. I was able to stop but it wasn't as fast as it should be. Scary stuff indeed

I hear ya. Earlier this year I was on the highway going about 55 mph. I floored it and the gas pedal stayed on the floor.

I pressed on the brake pedal with my left foot and tried to wedge my right foot underneath the gas pedal to break it loose. I was just about ready to give up and shift to neutral when the gas pedal broke loose.
At least my brakes worked, lol. Not having brakes with downshifting being the only option would be scary indeed. I'm surprised that hasn't happened to me yet.

Ok- I got the parts.
Mechanic comes this afternoon
Thanx for the good words gents.
When the pedal went to the floor- you counldn't push a pin in my puckered poopshoot
Hey Ovi- are the more expensive rotors(high performance) any better quality steel?
Big difference in some of the pricing

Yup, that's the theory.
The cheapest ones are usually made in china and vary from absolute crap to perfectly fine. The mid grades range from MIC to MIA and are usually really good. The high end ones are MIA and usually really good. I don't know the technical differences, but I've always assumed it was a better grade of steel as well.
I do know that I try and avoid selling the cheapest rotors on larger trucks & vans as they tend to warp a bit and give you pulsation. It doesn't mean you need the fanciest wagner's either though.

Just thankful you're ok man.

Thanx Ovi
Some of those rotors have rows of holes drilled in them(to cool faster?)
Not sure, however, in hindsight, this was my fault for not keeping up with maintenace on this
heavy bucket of bolts!
So far, I'm in for about 400 in parts, but mechanic will give me a good hourly rate and he's doing the house call. I know if I took it in it would be 1600-1800

Glad you're ok! That's one heavy beast to need to stop.
I'm scared of this sometimes, but at least know with manual trans I can kill it that way if needed. Still would take a while

My cousin had this happen in his Kenworth a few years back - he found out he had no brakes when a small car tried to turn left in front of him on the highway with not much extra room to spare. I think it's a bit easier to go down gears/use the jake brake in a big semi, but I don't think he really had time for that and ended up pumping the e-brake to come to a stop

Personally the only time I had something like that happen was when I got my tire changed on my bike one time. They didn't pump the brake pedal to get the pads back in place after putting the wheel back on so I had to do that myself after discovering I had no rear brakes a little ways down the road on my way home. Rear brakes on a bike are next to useless anyways though so it was no biggie. If the fronts had the same thing happen that might've been a problem...

I'm glad you're safe (and the others around you on the road today).
Maintain your brakes doofus.

Loo, this happened to me this last march.
I was hauling a load in on my huge flatbed and had about 8,000lbs worth of produce on the back tearing down to the cooler.
Blew through a stop sign at about 40-50mph, shit down both legs and the. Immediately split the axle to low gearing, forced the stick into 2nd gear while grinding/roasting syncros (lol, it sounded worse than it was) and got the truck down to about 5mph and ran it into a field full of dirt to slow it to a stop.
Turns out the truck, unbeknownst to me has the hydrovac braking system which essentially has a booster on the firewall and a booster hidden down in the frame rails.
When you bleed the system, the hydrovac attached to the frame rails needs to be bled as well. Oops.
Bled it in the field and off we went. No problems since.

Just glad nobody was hurt.
The last rotors I bought were made in Canada, they were inexpensive and very good quality. They were drilled and slotted for better performance.

Yup- damn hot. Last year helped a guy with a deck and about 2 in the afternoon I quit sweating. Almost tipped over.
It was so blasted hot.
So- under 400 in parts and 100+ beer for labor Not too shabby.
Those fargin rotors are 50 pounds a piece!
