Incoming NAD

So last night I found a good deal on a Mojotone Superbass. It was modded with a master volume and a switch that allows you to go from the 2203 circuit to the Plexi bright channel. So technically it's not a Superbass anymore lol but still an interesting amp. I plan to install a Metro loop and maybe JEL mod the 2203 side, to have the ultimate Marshall style amp. But maybe I will do the loop only. I need to listen to the circuit first. It Should be here later this week and I will update the thread. :thu:

It arrived today:

The good: the amp looks clean and sounds good. The Plexi/2203 preamp mod is very interesting. With the switch set to 2203 mode, it sounds/works like a 2203 should. On Plexi mode, it's the bright channel of the 1959SLP, but with a master volume. So if you set the master on ten and bring the volume up with the Gain knob, it works like a NVM plexi should. But you can also use all sorts of different combinations between the volume/gain anmd get a whole rang of cleaner tones.

Now the bad: the amp's volume is very quiet overall. Certainly not what I'd expect from a 100w Marshall. Actually the 20w Plexi I had was way louder. Even on 5w mode it way way louder. So there is definitely a problem there. Any idea of what it could be? I already ruled tubes by trying a whole different set to no avail. The tone is good and there is no hum or any other apparently problem, just super low output.

I emailed the seller and I am waiting for a reply. I like the amp so hopefully we can work something out and get it repaired. Or it will go back :( To be continued....

Looks great but yeah a 100 watt tube Marshall should be painful af with the master bypassed.

Is there a PPiMV or something not in plain sight?

nothing that I can see. I will see if the seller pays for my tech to look at it. Something is definitely not right.

Do you know if the amp ever operated normal/loudly?

How old was the kit?

Is there a loop volume control?

There is no loop at all. I bought a Mojotone loop but I haven't installed it yet. I will take it to my tech and have him figure it out and install the loop. The seller offered me $300 back so that should cover the cost of the repair.

Damn. Wonder if he knew it had some kind of issue...Like that first ALX EMG that I bought that the dude clearly knew he was selling something broken.

The only time I had that problem was a Crate Blue Voodoo with a failing OT. Hopefully it's something simpler.

yeah who knows. The guy seems nice so I am giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah I hope it is simple. The amp sounds like it should, just not a lot of volume.

At least it doesn't sound like a Blue Voodoo!

Yeah it's disappointing. I'll take it to my tech this week and hopefully this will be an inexpensive fix. I'm just waiting my my effects loop to get here so my tech can do all work in one shot.

is it so quiet that you can't use it live? because.... this could be a blessing in disguise.... so many people chase the cranked Marshall sound but not at an ear splitting volume level... you may have lucked out with this amp

I think I could use it live with the volume all the way up. It's probably loud enough that way, which yeah, it is actually pretty cool lol
But I'm sure the volume issue is a symptom of an internal problem, so I don't want to keep using it until I know what the problem is.

ok... yeah... if you have to crank it to 11 to use it live then something is really wrong somewhere....

Imagine running a gig at full tilt, and you bump the amp just right and the proper connection is made. The amp decimates the entire venue.
