I've been using AT M50s for a long time. I don't know, I've had them maybe like 10 years or something. I don't use them often, but I have been using them lately, and they just sound like total shit!! I don't remember them sounding bad in the past, but they are fucking awful. I have some cheap $25 Tascam ones, too, and a pair of Status Audio open backs that I love and sound great, but are not good at all for tracking because I can hear everything going on in the room. I plugged in the Tascams...and wtf...they sound a million times better than the M50s!! I was messing with volume, and I think the drivers on my M50s are blown. So much clipping and rattling...you know, the sound you get when a speaker is just not working properly.

I guess that means it's time for some new ones. Yes, I have the Tascams, but I need to have 2 pairs because I do a lot of random acoustic recordings and helping friends bands sometimes with recordings, so a lot of times it's me and someone else using them.

I don't know what to get. Bill recommended AKG240s, and they are on the list, but I am looking for comfort above a lot of other things this time. The Status Audios are cloth instead of that plasticy fake leather shit on the ear surrounds. So I'd like something with similar material there. I sweat a lot, and the fake leather shit gets really uncomfortable and hot, which makes me sweat more.

Currently leaning toward Beyer Dynamic 770s, but they have different ohm ratings, and I have no idea how to choose the right ohm rating.

What else we got?

I have a pair of Senn HD280 Pro's and a pair of AKG K240 Studio's. The Senn's are heavier and more isolating being a closed design, and the AKG's are lighter with more of an airy type of sound with the semi-open backs. The AKG's are more comfortable for longer wear times. I like them both but I question the quality of the sound card on my laptop because at times I feel the Senn's are a bit bass heavy and the AKG's are a touch soft.

So not to hijack, but what can I add in between the cans and the laptop to get some more EQ control?

Interesting. I’m gonna say it. I hate hd280s lol. I had them before the m50s for years.

I also rules out the akgs when I realized they’re semi open. Must be closed.

Not sure about your question. Maybe they make headphone amps with eq on them?

I’m leaning toward the DT700s now.

I think I bought those tascams and they broke immediately, and they sucked to me anyway. Lol

And you sweat wearing headphones? Your ears??? Lol. I’m genuinely confused. I’ve never sweated wearing headphones unless I was playing drums.

Anyway, I know you don’t like to go to the store but I’m pretty sure GC has a bunch of headphones setup and you can listen to em in the store. I assume most GC have the same display, I use the Yamaha ones for quite awhile now. I’d guess 6-7 years. I definitely feel they work pretty closely with my monitors as far as if I hear it on one I usually hear the same issue or tweak needed on the other. So that’s really what I need em for. They don’t have too much bass which many headphones can and, like I said, I can make good mix decisions with em. They’ll prolly take a little to get used to over those Tascams or whatver you are using. I know the Tascams were definitely hyped and had an unnatural EQ curve which isn’t what I want for mixing

I never use the tascams. I just ordered them because they were cheap and I needed a couple pairs for other people to use lol.

And yes. My ears and whatever parts of my head are contacting the headphones sweat and make the material slick and they slide around the side of my face lol.

Maybe at the GC farther from me but the close one doesn’t have anything like that. I got my monitors at the other GC and they had a monitor display like this, which is how I chose, but last time I was there they didn’t have anything like that for headphones. Maybe they do now. I haven’t been to that one in a while.

So I went with Beyerdynamic DT700 pro x. They are SUPER comfortable and sound great in the 5 minutes I've fucked with them. More fucking around probably later this week.
