2023 pick thread

We had one a while ago but let's do an updated one.

The other day, I was trying to get used to play flat bridges again (strats etc) and I remembered that when I was primarily playing strats I was using the little red Jazz III picks. So I got a pack of them and bam! The muscle memory came right back. Funny how that works lol

And I can also play my TOM guitars with them just fine so I'm switching back to Jazz III full time.

So what pick are you using these days? Type and thickness.

Ultex .8-1.0 depending on which guitar I am playing. Also use Fender heavy's and green Tortex if I want a bit different feel on the attack.

I'm not that picky; I pretty much just grab whatever shit I have laying around. My preference is standard Fender-type shape, .73 to 1mm

My favorites are the Graphtec TUSQ picks but I lost basically all of them I had and still haven't bought more

I have all sorts of Dunlops. I used Tortex purple then went thinner over time, green or yellow. A few years ago I tried Ultex. I crack the .60 in a few days. The sharp .73 are my current favorite.

I really like the black Dunlop Flow which are 1.35mm, but for fun my band bought 100 of the D'addario 1mm duralin picks with our logo on them so I've been using those... they feel and play nice but wear faster than the dunlops

Currently the Dunlop Flow Blue. I also bought some greens so we'll see.

I like the EJ Jazz III but these let me mix more pick in like a traditional pick. Especially for playing some funk styles. This is like a traditional pick with a tip similar to a Jazz III.

I used to use the Hetfield White fang, Tortex .88, or Ultex .88, but a few months ago I found an old black Jazz III in an old pick container and I love it. It doesn't wear out like other picks for me. Other picks last like a couple of playing sessions and then I don't like the attack on them haha. These Jazz seems to last forever. Took a bit to get used to the small size, but now that I am, I'm not going back. Just got a 20 pack off Amazon a few weeks ago. Should last me a good while.

I’ve been using the Tortex TIIIs lately. Full size Tortex pick but with the Jazz tip. I love them. I’ve been using the greens but I’m gonna be getting some yellows soon. Big fan.

Dunlop Primetone .88. Pricey but really nice and last a long time.

Tortex, yellow through purple. I change it up periodically as the thinner picks have a more aggressive edge and the thicker are smoother.

Been using .71mm Delrin 500's for decades and after trying dozens of other picks, I've only found three others that I can use without having to alter my playing.
Image

.88 Snarling Dogs - They have a really nice textured grip. Used them at my last gig and was very happy.
Image

1mm Hell Guitars Super Blacks - They're only a little smaller than the Delrin 500's, but I like the concave grip a lot.
Image

Dava Delrin Grip Tips - their website doesn't list the gauge; they feel like .85mm.
They're a bit too pointy so, I have to wear them down before gigging or recording.

I like picks that are smaller but thick. I use the Jim Dunlop Stubby 3.0 and 2.0, depending on my mood and occasionally the Jazz III's.

Funny coincidence that this thread came up. I pretty much call ultex 1.13 (something above 1) home. I was in my pick ash tray and found 2 gravity picks that were 3's. 1 of which had a rough edge to it like...the edge plays. Felt weird for a few seconds. The attack is completely different and sounds pretty awesome with single coils and dirt. But, I can play anything that's around 1mm. Less than .8 and it's like limp dick sex.

I've used the same picks for the last 14 years. Dunlop Ultex Sharp 1.13 and the Jazz III graphite with the textured grip. First is what mainly use and the second I use for complicated playing. I don't feel a need to change.

I’d like to try those Hell Super Blacks, but their website is not working very well, so I can’t order any.

Until then, Dunlop Primetone Jazz III XLs will do nicely.
