Working on Tones, had to share this one.

Messing around with "old school" recording techniques. You know, barely any gain, dumping track after track over the top of each other. Got this one and  .

It's pretty much just a palm-muted march (thanks, Scott Ian) until around 1:45 where it opens up and you really hear the "juice" of it. It's six takes of a 5150 emulator that's on the crunch setting, just enough gain to fatten up, not enough to really grind, but man stacked up like that it sounds so fat.

I know, it ain't "today" at all, but that's so close to the sound in my head it's darn near scary. I need to get a mix going with this tone at some point.

Yeah it sounds awesome man. That's how I like to record.
Can't wait to hear it in a mix, that's where this type of tone really shines!!

Sounds awesome, kinda like a lower gain Tool type of tone, and I've always loved their tones!

That sounds super chunky, beefy and mean. Nicely done!

Agree with MO on the Tool vibe.

OH NO! NOT TOOL!

Just kidding.

Working on futzing with the real amps to get something similar to this and man, there's some chunk when the gain's so low. Getting excited to put together a full mix now. Even got me working on new riff ideas, which hasn't happened very often in the last couple years.

What worked for me as a guitarist was running as little gain as I could get away while still getting the sound I wanted, then compensating with as much volume as I could get away with to get the speakers really working. I think it's more percussive, and it leaves more character intact than rolling up the gain and/or boosting while keeping the volume low.

As a bassist, I get where others are getting the Tool vibe. I like that this track and arrangement would leave a lot of room for me to work.

 volume over gain. Which is tough to do a lot of times at home.

Funniest thing with this arrangement, Anthrax pretty much just hammers the shit out of that same rhythm guitar / bass / drums, outside of a bit of color from the bass about three times through the whole thing. Granted, it's a great rhythm so why not?

Really dig this but the idea of stacking 5+ tracks and then having to double that sounds like a pain in the dick.

I’ll settle for less good tones lol.

Keep going tho, would like to see this fleshed out and mixed accordingly.

Nice work sir!

Thanks, bros.

Started working on a stacked tone for the DSLs this morning. Holy fuckin' fuck. I got a super scoopy tone through the mesa cab, then am layering in some brighter takes of the other DSL with the G12H30. It's gonna be a gat damned monster when I'm done. I'll need another couple days to get the drums programmed for this track I started this morning, since I only get like forty minutes a day to do anything fun anymore, but I'll get it and post it up.
