I am considering building a guitar from a kit for a friend as a birthday gift. Building from a kit should be realativly easy but I am cluless on how to finish it. I was told that the bodies are sealed and do not take well to staining which would be my first choice. So that leaves me with painting it a color and probablyu clearcoating. How do most of you guys paint these things? Can I do this from a "rattle can" or do I need to shoot it with a spray rig? What kind of paint do I need to use? It has to be somewhat scratch resistant needless to say.

I have seen some great looking guitars here and some other forums in the past, so any help would be appreciated.

If it were for me I would be more likely to just expierimant and see what happens, but this is a gift and has to have a higher standard.

You should be able to sand off the sealer. If you dont want to go that route, tinting clear lacquer with transtint is easy enough. Minwax nitrocellulose lacquer in quart cans sprayed through a preval.50/50 lacquer/thinner and tint to taste. Then spray clear.

yeah you can rattle can , there are many options , reranch for nitro , stroll over to reranch forum as well .

reranch has the best online selection of rattle can lacquer. Great match to vintage colors too.
I have used these with great results. Lacquer breathes and allows more resonances in the body to permeate and results in a much better tone. Urethane and enamel are much heavier paints and are more durable but effect tone in a negative way by deadening body resonance.

Another vote for reranch. If you are going to put the effort in, you might as well use quality materials. I would hold off on real spray equipment until you know you will be spraying several guitars.
