Question about Ping brand Floyd Rose...

I think these are fairly well regarded as far as Floyd Rose trems go, yeah? Weren't they an OEM supplier for a few brands like Fender and Peavey Wolfs?

My main question is:

Did Ping ever produce the Floyd Rose II style trem? With the cast zinc baseplate and steel inserts? Saw a Peavey labeled trem for sale (asking $99) and seller claims its a Ping, but I have doubts. Vintage Floyd website mentions nothing of Ping/FR2 relationship, or other quick Google machine searches.

Had a conversation with the seller regarding it, and he claimed Ping made the FR2 to 'tame the sound of the OFR'. Then I was told to go back to my mom's basement and play WoW because I didn't have anything better to do.

To my knowledge which is limited, I never saw ping do anything with the Floyd Rose II nor should they have ever because that thing was hot garbage. Pretty sure those were made by Schaller and not good. Ping did a version of the Floyd for Peaveys similar to the Gotoh GE1996T. It’s not a bad trem at all but if I still had my HP Special, I probably would have replaced it with the Gotoh by now.

Is this the type of tremolo you are referring to?

If so, it is made by Ping.

If you are talking about the single locking FRII, I've never heard about Ping making them.

Tame the sound of the OFR? I don't even know wtf that means? My experience is the more stupid a person is, the more likely they are to lash out at others online. So that's your guy.

Yeah, this seems like a person you don't want to buy from, so who cares about the product questions lol.

That looks identical to the one I'm talking about. Worth $99 (was $175)? NOPE. I still have the single locking FRII from a Kramer Striker I bought over 20 years ago, and yeah it's absolute trash - it's only mounted on a VH style guitar I put together a long time ago that's just a conversation piece more than anything else.. This one he's selling although double locking is not really any better.

So the one in question really is made by Ping according to Billy, but not the "Ping" OFR style model that's more well known.

Guy said the trem block had a Ping mark on it but he switched it out for another brand but no pics to verify. Either way he's just using the brand name to command a much higher price than it's worth. Calling it a Ping doesn't make it any more valuable IMO.

Ok, so he is correct about the manufacturer, but out of touch with reality. Joke's on me for engaging with him.

The best value by a significant margin on the double locking trem market is the Gotoh. Arguably the best version anyways, and way cheaper than any other version that isn't garbage

I would agree. I have one on a Sterling Ax40/Axis that's been on there for over a decade and it's been flawless.

I agree the Gotoh is the best value. Honestly, it's my favorite Floyd regardless of price.

I had that same Ping tremolo, but mine was Kramer branded. It was alright. Not good or great, but serviceable under moderate use. I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it. It's not as good as the Ping OFR.
And even the Ping OFR is a bit overrated tbh. It's a decent trem but no match for a Gotoh or German OFR.

Yeah, regardless of how good it is.

Brand new Gotoh is like $160? $170? Just get that.

More money for different colours, but still a fantastic deal.

I replaced all my OFRs with Gotohs because I was able to turn a profit on the deal, and come out with a better guitar

So I'm guessing that Ping manufactured those FR2 trems because of the Peavey Wolfgang contract and they wanted a low cost version for the Special/EXP line?

I don't think they were made only for Peavey. I've seen Kramer, Washburn, Cort and other companies using them too (with their respective brand names on the tremolo). I think it was just a tremolo Ping was offering as a lower tier OEM.

Gotcha. I've seen plenty of those double locking FR2 trems, but I had no indication they were made by Ping
