Today is EVH day

I just picked this beast up. Jesus H, could they have made it bigger?
They may as well have put some speakers in the dam thing, it's so big.
Ridiculous!
Anyway, I literally just plugged it in with eq at noon on the red channel. Bam! Sounds awesome! Definitely within the 5150 realm, BUT, I'm not sure it's going to stay yet. Obviously I'm going to give it more than a 5 minute try out, but initially I'm thinking it might be a bit too polite. It's like a 5150 that's gone to finishing school. Very civilized! And then there's the size of it.
What were they thinking?

Congrats. I thought my 50 watt EVH was too polite as well. Kicked it to the curb.

Yeah it’s more refined but yeah all at noon is a very legit solid tone. But these amps can handle much higher settings on the treble and presence. As well as the mids if necessary. I find they can get plenty aggressive. As evidenced by the countless metal records done with the first version of the amp. It definitely doesn’t have those sorta boxy mids of the orginal PV. I know that’s become sorta engrained in the metal heads subconscious because of how popular a PV 5150 boosted with a TS into Vintage 30s became. But once you learn some good settings for your cab and setup, these can get just as brutal without such hard sounding mids.

That’s how I felt about the originals too. But the stealth has more aggression and for me was much better.

Might need to be retubed. My other guitarist had one and it was a sweet amp.

I agree they're more polite than the older ones. That's probably the reason they came out with the Stealth versions.
It's still a great sounding amp though.
I agree about the head size. Ridiculous.

I always liked that they were a little more polite. I loved the Peaveys, but those grating mids kind of got on my nerves after several years.

How much different are these really from a 6505+? I feel like I should have one in the stable just cause they are a modern classic but my 6505+ is my least played amp

They reminded me more of a JSX then a 6505+.

Once you have the EVH for awhile, I think this becomes true.. At least for me.. I still like to mess with my PVs, but the EVH is better. Its clearer, its just as aggressive just in a different way..The original isn't polite either.. I know why some say that, but play with the dials and compare, one can get the eve , any version, super aggressive and brutal

They are definitely different.. The PV has those mids.. They're harder and can be kinda boxy sounding.. Neither LOVE to be scooped, but maybe the EVH can do it a bit better. Plus the Blue channel is such pure sound.. It generally needs a boost for real heavy shit, but it takes boosts about as good as a fender clean amp takes dirt pedals!. I guess cause it is kinda a Fender.. But that blue, if I just needed one channel. A "Modern 800" vibe that can anything from low grit to high gain, thats the channel.

I'm really liking this amp. Well, the red channel at least. I have spent about a minute each on the green and blue channels. It's all about the high gain channel for me. I've heard that many people complained about the lack of a resonance control on this amp. I get that, but I don't think it's that much of a shortcoming. The amp has plenty of low end resonance as it is. Also, I agree that adding some high end and some presence brings forth some of the rudeness and nastiness of the OG 5150. Cool amp. I just wish it was smaller and had the power and standby switches on the front.

I actually liked it didn’t have the resonance. It’s basically a set resonance setting of about “6”. As far as when they added it I remember reading that the original was basically set there. But something about dialing in just from the Bass, mid, Treb and Presence made dialing in that amp easy. Or at least you didn’t overthink it as much. Cause the resonance is such a powerful control that even small increments make a pretty big differnce. So fuck it, set it and forget it. And there is Definitley PLENTY of low end.
If I recall correctly, Evh settings for that version was Bass 3.5 or 4, mids 3 and treble 6.5. Presence like 6.5 and gain at 6.5. Hit that with a bit of volume and see where those get you. Should be fat and cutting. Not super aggressive but I remember trying those and being like, these works just fine!
And I want to say Gojira settings wer bass 4.5, mid 6, treb 6 and presence I don’t remember. But 6.5 is a good starting point for about any setting. And gain at 6 or higher
