…Orange Will Do Nicely

Good evening,

If you ever have the opportunity to make a ton of money, but you have to drive to Williston, ND, from Madison, WI, in a day, take it, with the understanding that you are going to look for a new job immediately.

What that trip did, however, was instill boredom. I found myself browsing Reverb for hours on end, while listening to Eric Bischoff lie his ass off about the impact of ECW. During such moments, I bought some pedals: The Ftelettronica Anonymous Flange, which might be missing from the parcel locker, the Ftelettronica Envelope Follower/Triggered Filter, the Digitech Bass Whammy, and an Orange Guitar Butler. It is the latter that I will discuss here.

The Butler is Orange doing what I need them to do: Make a two-channel pedal-based preamp/DI. I haven’t played mine, but I think the clip of the guitarist from Boris, Wata, playing it sounded fantastic. Then again, Boris is one of those weirdo Japanese bands that make lovely noise, so it could just be her playing, and my love of noisy rock, and not the pedal, which invalidates my opinion.

Please forgive the tortured sentences: I just drove from North Dakota, and I am in dire need of sleep.

The pros:

- Wata made it sound good
- It does the things I want it to do, save for one
- It’s not digital modeling
- The Bass Butler sounds even better, and I will be getting one, as soon as I sell the VT Bass and the Helix
- It has an effects loop
- You can bludgeon someone to death with it

The Cons:

- It is Massive
- It requires an 18v center-positive power supply, which is provided, but still represents a significant pain in the ass
- It has the dumbest name imaginable, and the pedal’s graphics are ridiculous
- Orange might love those hieroglyphics, but I sure don’t. I get that not everyone in the world speaks English, but they’re needlessly confusing.
- It does not do stereo out. Not a dealbreaker, but I was hoping to have two XLR outs for cab, and one for board. Tall order.
- It’s black. When I buy an Orange product, I expect it to be, well, orange, with white accents.

Are these enough to make me sell it, too? Nope. It sounds good, and it will work with my Accugroove Latte cab. Probably. I’ll just get a powered El Whappo, for the Bass Butler.

On a side note: Those Ftelettronica pedals are quite big. I don’t know how I am going to fit them all onto my board, and I have six more gigantic pedals to buy - Ring Stinger, Doppelgänger, Valco BloodBuzz, Space Echo, and Deep Oggin. I’m still considering just getting a DC-2W, and calling it a day, on chorus. In the meantime, I need to find that flanger, and make some fresh pasta.

Thank you.

First time I've heard about the Orange Butler.. looks interesting.

I like this kind of analog DI gear.
