So I have an Instagram account that is mostly just where I post pics of guitar work that I've done or guitars I've built. Every day I get notifications of new followers. Sometimes it's as many as 5 or 6 new followers, yet at the end of the day, I rarely have more than 1 or 2 new followers. My theory is that there are a large group of people who follow other people for no other reason than they are "collecting" followers and expect to be followed back. So when I don't follow them back, they unfollow me. I don't follow people back, because I only follow others who I have a real interest in, such as a band whose music I like, or another builder whose work I appreciate. I don't want my feed cluttered up with posts from people I don't know.

Plus, I really don't want people following me unless they are legitimately interested in my work.

I wish there was a way to prevent these people from even following me in the first place. Oh well, just had to complain about it. Rant over.

Narcissists are the fucking scourge of the social media universe. My (ex) brother and my ex (spouse) are direct evidence of that fact. Fuck them.

Yeah, my ex and several of her friends are the same. Constantly posting selfies, etc..

They can all get fucked.

They are probably bots, or at least farm managed accounts.

Exactly what it is. The accounts probably then get nuked. I get the same shit daily. Impossibly hot girls with no posts and 1k followers. They can follow all they want but no way in hell I’m following back.

Following and refollowing is absolutely a way to market an account. It works more efficiently in a site with a common theme. For example mrs mort does this on a site that is specified to selling/buying used trendy lady clothes. In a site like IG it makes less sense because the areas of interest are so vast and good connections are less likely if the effort isn't well targeted.
