Pantera reunion tour?

Post by Maddnotez »

Well it is official. Papers have been signed..in 2023 Phil and Rex will be performing as Pantera with unknown replacements members, yikes.

Not sure how I feel about this. Negative I guess. As far as I knew there was a lot of bad blood between Phil and the Abbot's. Not to mention if Phil is even capable of doing this (in a non death metal voice).

Obviously I dont know any of them personally but if the Abbot's did end their lives with no reconciliation with Phil then wow, that seems kind of fucked up to move forward with "Pantera" without them. Maybe some legal battles? Who knows but Pantera will be touring next year.

Phil is on very good terms with Darrell's widow Rita. Who will play guitar? I'm hoping for:

Rocky George (currently unemployed)
Jay Yuenger (currently unemployed)
Kenny Hickey (currently unemployed)
Page Hamilton
Tommy Victor
Kirk Windstein (is good friends with Phil and Rex)
Sammy Duet (currently unemployed)
Mike Sanchez (currently unemployed)

Not:
Zakk Wylde

Also Not:
Zakk Wylde

And Really Not:
Zakk Wylde

That's good and as far as I know that makes sense because she was left in control of Pantera maybe?

It's definitely not Zakk, that was the only statement that was made is that it isn't Zakk

Marzi Montazeri. He played with Phil in the Illegals and the dude is a beast. They covered Primal Concrete Sledge, Domination and Death Rattle when I saw them and his playing was spot on.

Agreed on ZW, fuck that. I know I’m not the only one that doesn’t want to hear the entirety of Floods using pinch harmonics.

I ftfy on Sammy, currently fronting Goatwhore and doing very well with multiple endorsements including one from ESP with whom he has two signature guitars.

Not one in that list could rip Dimes solos on a level that’s close except for Zakk. I’ve seen some of the dudes Phil’s had do all right with the solos, but to me, on most other things the solos aren’t the priority, but for Dime and Pantera , it’s gotta be top shelf to be taken serious …

Just not interested in seeing Halftera. I mean Dime and Vinnie were Pantera.

*Edit* Gene Hogeland on drums and Buckethead on the geetore!

*Double edit* my wife had a great idea of why not make it a memorial tour and they bring in professional artists that are local to the area to play drums and guitar?

I dunno, man. Phil doing the all Pantera set on the Slayer tour was way better than I expected, but calling anything a "Pantera Reunion" at this point, when the brothers are gone? Nope. It'll be "Pantera Like" but not a reunion.

I knew Rex had to be angling for something, what with how much Dime pumping he does on his youtube channel so far, but wasn't expecting this.

I agree.

They can play it. A million guys can. But Dime is very much like EVH in the sense that his feel and swing is very unique. Just playing the right notes won't cut it. His roots were really blues/southern rock mixed in with the 80s shred and it has to be someone who had shares that same foundation. And someone big enough to play the material correctly while adding a bit of their personal flair to so it doesn't sound like a bad cover band. I think Zakk is the guy who fits all of this criteria and has experience with this kind of gig, being that he followed Randy and Jake in Ozzy's band and was able to play the previous material and find his own space.

Drummers, I think Iggor Cavalera would be a great choice but I am biased because he's a friend. I do think he has the right feel for the job though. Charlie Benante could be cool too.

That said, I don't like this at all. I doubt I'd go see it and I am almost offended by it in "don't fuck with my childhood memories" type of way.

I’m okay with this tour as long as the band is not explicitly called Pantera. Phil and Rex definitely don’t need the money, but I also understand that Pantera has amassed a lot of young fans since their breakup, so I’m sure newer fans would like to hear those songs performed live in any capacity with the surviving members. Just don’t call it Pantera, or else it comes off as a sleazy cash grab.

As far as a guitarist is concerned, I think Vogg from Decapitated would be a good fit. He’s a double threat guitarist (great rhythm and lead player) just like Dime, and the original incarnation of Decapitated was like the Pantera of death metal. Vogg and his brother Vitek (R.I.P.) were locked in super tight like Dime and Vinnie. Not only that, but Vogg definitely has a lot of Dime in his playing style, although his brand of music may be more “extreme.”

No I don’t think Page can play like Dime. Nor Rocky George. His style is way different. And so is Page’s, who prolly has some real “shred” chops in there somewhere but it’s not like he breaks it out . At all. So it would be a massive undertaking for even a pro like Page to get that style of playing up to that level.

Zakk has that Dime style available at the drop of a hat imo. It’s there. He just has to dial it in. I could see vogg being good too.

Also I guess I’m hearing Charlie Benante for drums and that seems like a good fit too

Well I guess previous claims were wrong. It will be Zakk and Charlie!! Charlie is the best drummer for the job imo.

That's how I feel. It would seem a little less of an exploitation if they would bill it as Phil, Rex and friends "Playing the music of Pantera" or something similar.

But, to promoters and industry people, its all in the name so I'm sure it will be called Pantera.

That's the best possible choice given the circumstances but I'm still not completely on board with this.

Not on board either.

I’d have loved to see Wes Hauch get that gig…

I never liked Phil Anselmo. When I was younger I would’ve liked to fight him. His vocals were decent though.
