I'm excited because metal time with the wifey. But the last time I saw Priest was during the Painkiller tour and I saw Queensryche on Mindcrime and Empire. The stakes are high for both bands, comparatively

They have a new singer. New drummer and guitarist as well. Michael Wilton and Eddie Jackson are still there. New singer has a good voice and they have released some solid music with him. But as a band; they were a moment in time for me. I'm still going to enjoy the show I think.

Oh yeah Rockenfield was awesome. Eddie Jackson's bass tone is godly. I saw them with Metallica and Suicidal. Both shows were KILLER.

Last time I saw priest, Slayer was opening for them. Quite the contrast.

QR has sort went "modern" in their current iteration. They'll hold their own I am suspecting. Our next show after that is going to be Snoop and Ice Cube

Speaking of contrasts

I'm sure you know I'm not the biggest QR fan, so it'll probably be no surprise that I walked out on them a couple songs into their headlining set after seeing Armored Saint open for them. That was 5 or so years ago.
Also saw them open for Metallica back in '88 (AJFA tour). Snooze-fest.

I didn't know that. I figured they were old enough for you to like them

That would have been Operation Mindcrime era. If you don't like that; I don't know what to tell you.

Sorry man... always had trouble operating in a universe in which AJFA and Mindcrud even coexist

Priest on the Defenders tour was my first real concert. Amazing show.
I saw Queensryche on the Mindcrime tour in Seattle on New Year's Eve and that was a total blowout.

Twas a great show. Smaller venue that got moved from the attached civic center to the theater side so much smaller setting.
Both bands did great overall. Sound wise; Priest was much better on the guitar tone side of things. If you told me Queensryche were using modeling rigs; I would not be surprised. Much more heft and just TONE to JP.
QR opened with Queen of the Reich and my oh my; that was both an awesome opener but also a fairly tough act for them to follow. They did good. Random observations. Their other guitar player Mike Stone (?) was great. Their replacement drummer did an excellent job as well.
I am never one for the old "oh this person or that person should come back". I found myself wishing that if there was only one original guitarist present; DeGarmo would have been my choice by quite a long shot over Wilton. His backing vocals would be a great addition to LaTorre's vox. They did a good mix of really all the GOOD eras of QR. The acoustics of the venue weren't quite clear enough to allow the nuances of what they do to shine through. But they were still \m/
Priest came next obviously. Intro music was War Pigs and it was awesome seeing a packed theater sing along to it. They opened with a song I've always considered a dud (One Shot at Gory) and it kind of threw me off for a sec. They "recovered" and played overall a kicka$$ set. Other than the trilogy of songs of theirs I loathe. Stageset and lightshow were KILLER.
Halford did great. Especially for a 70 year old. You could tell he had to alter his phrasing (might want to lay off the 75lb coats when you are trying to sing?) to accommodate. He also did a lot of call and response to let the audience do his work for him ala Vince Neil. Difference being when he took the mic back; he SANG his a$$ off. Having the variety of catalog Priest has coupled with the pressure he has put on himself over the years of the standard of his vocal skills; it's a tough one I bet. They hit pretty much every era (this being the 50 Year tour and all). From Rocka Rolla (which was AWESOME) to Lightning Strikes from Firepower. Excellent choices really in all era. I could have used a few more here and there but it's a LOT of ground to cover.
The real star of the show is Richie Faulkner. That dude is a BEAST. Just KILLER playing and showmanship. Perfect addition to Priest. I hope he continues on, after JP rides off into the sunset. GREAT player. Sneap kind of goes under the radar for a number of reasons; but he was ripping some KILLER solos here and there as well. Overall; great players I would love to see do something else together. It sounded like they may have been tuned down a half step, perhaps. Wet, RIPPING roided out Marshall tone. Whatever they were using \m/
Glad we went to this. I am not sure how many more years bands of this nature have in them. I'd say catch them now before they are gone for good.

Queen of the Reich is pretty much the ONLY QR song I ever really liked. Most of the rest always just seemed like vocal masturbation, and I don't like it

JT - is JP down to one guitarist now? How'd that go?

They have two. Faulkner and Andy Sneap (who kicked a lot of a$$ in his own right). They were a great team \m/

I don't think I have much clue about the metal world anymore... isn't Andy Sneap a producer???

He is. Someone who has worked with a ton of big names. Accept, Testament, JP. Great guitar player in his own right. He was in Sabbat back in the day.
On you not liking QR; I am always off with your tastes

You like classic metal but it seems you dig the rough edges a bit more. Like Dianno vs. Dickinson thing.

DiAnno > Bruce
Ozzy > Dio (that was hard to write)
Bon > Bruce
Bush > Belladonna (also very torn about this)
Shite > Axl
See the general pattern? If the “dude” has to grab himself by teh testes to hit the notes, I’m not that interested.
There are exceptions. Halford is the fucking metal god, and rumor has it that his testes were clipped long ago.
