Just saw this vid. Not sure if the overloud goth vocals are good or bad (leaning towards good) and the fingerless gloves are in that same boat. But I really dig the vibe, the production and the song overall

Play by play:
- "Can you hear me? Can you hear me runnin'?"
- First verse: So 90s, such wow.
- "FUCK UM! HUH!"
- There's some lulz in this chorus, but I can't specify why.
- Singer has zero range. Again, so 90s.
- Playing in a church is either trying to be badass, or trying to up the "are they Christian or super kewl edgy?" questions.
- The bridge they almost tried to do something with. Almost.
- Background yelling is meh.
- OH NO! LATE DOUBLE KICKS! HOLD AWN FUCKERS!
- Well, that was brief.
- Ah, bird noises.

I don't hate it. I don't love it. It's certainly a thing that exists.

P.S. Every Christian I've ever known says "fuck um" six times a day and twice and Sundays, so those two things aren't necessarily diametrically opposed. That's the most intellectually stimulating thing I can say here.

Listening again. Can't unhear Mike and the Mechanics now Still dig it though.

Singer's "range" is certainly limited. I do like what he does in this though? Like a more gothic iteration of Trouble if they were playing a random song off the Black Album that I actually didn't hate. With less vocal range and dynamics. I'm still sticking with it. Interested to see what the next few tunes sound like.

I just want to thank you for planting "Can you Hear Me" in my head so firmly it actually invaded my dreams last night.

Not as good as Type O Negative.

They are the standard bearers of the time, aren't they? Never listened to them much back in the day. Too slow and moody without any energy. I could be (and probably am) completely generalizing in that regard; but every time I actively tried to listen I just couldn't ever dig on them.

Try October Rust. It's their masterpiece.

If that's what you already tried, then I don't know what to tell you.

October Rust is definitely the most accessible. It sounds like Pink Floyd and The Beatles made a baby with Sisters of Mercy and some Quaaludes.

World Coming Down is their best, IMO. It's probably the most artfully depressing thing I've ever heard.

What's the heaviest (in the metal sense) of all their albums? That would be what I would probably want to check out first.

Slow, Deep, and Hard: Gothy NY punk slowed down

Bloody Kisses: Same, but with some super halloween spookies (Black #1, Christian Woman)

October Rust: Big Budget, glossy mix, produced, goth anthems.

World Coming Down: Literally the sound of lament. Crushingly heavy to me. Like sabbath in slow motion with tons of pain.

Life is Killing Me: More gothy Beatles feels. Anesthesia might be one of the best songs they've ever written.

Dead Again: Had its moments, but the real power in this record is in the ballad-y parts (September Sun is brilliant)

I'm leaving out Origin of the Feces because it's basically a mock live version of SDH... and Least Worst Of is a compilation record, but the two new songs (12 Black Rainbows, and Stay out of My Dreams) were badass.


....so World Coming Down, IMO.

Gothy is good. To a degree. The Beatles influence, unless it's just an album of tuned down Elanor Rigby's; is not a big draw to my normal tastes. I'll give World Coming Down a spin when the new Helloween is done "spinning"

So listening to the first track on WCD. What are they using for the guitar tone? Massive but also buzzy and scooped but perfect for the music. I think the only Type O I ever gave more than 5 seconds of attention to was Bloody Kisses singles.

Kenny was using a Dual Rec on that record. A big part of the trashy buzzy tone was the Sustainer pickups.

Loop’s description of each record is on point.

I’d also like to add that Dead Again has some killer Beatlesesque grooves added into Halloween in Heaven and All Hail and Farewell Britain. Ode to Locksmiths is the jam.

And re:WCD. Excellent album. My favorite TON album. Pete was in a real dark place on that one. Aside from Everyone I Love Is Dead and Everything Dies, personal favorites go to White Slavery, the title track, Pyretta Blaze and All Hallows’ Eve (which gets blasted every Halloween).

I dig their whole catalog. A couple favorites from Rust… In Praise of Bacchus is the sound of getting wine drunk while lamenting a breakup. Die With Me is just superbly pretty and dense. Green Man is a wonderful tune. Haunted is ethereal. Wolf Moon is one of my favorite tracks and that was even before I heard Peter Steele say what it’s really about. It’s about a guy who turns into a werewolf (which I knew alread) when he goes down on his girlfriend during her period. No bullshit that’s what the song is about. Pete said as much live when they played it. Also their Cinnamon Girl is better than Neil Young’s. Fight me.

Factor Pete’s distorted bass sound into the mix and that adds to the razor like buzz tone.

Also I love that this thread has been derailed into a Type O thread.

1. Listened to some Type O over the last few days. Some good stuff \m/
2. Listened to the song in the OP again a time or three over the weekend. Still like it
