The Netgear Orbi mesh systems are great for home use.... Use that at home and my house is old poured concrete and steel beams and is TERRIBLE for Wifi and just using a two unit kit was able to cover my entire property...

All this 'online' communications are killing our local area Comcast High Speed. It's even affecting our local NAPA store that is on Business High Speed.

Gun stores are pretty much completely sold out. The country is preparing.

Meanwhile, I'll be able to upload 80's retro EDM and trap/hiphop clips with a quickness.

The war will need a soundtrack.

Totally this! Upped our internet to 1000Mbps from 300Mbps, got a Docsis 3.1 cable modem from a 3.0 one, got a Netgear Nighthawk router, and 1 Nighthawk mesh extender.

Nothing like investing almost $800 in gear. Internet gear :(

False.

The mass sales of guns and ammo is a bipartisan movement. Everyone agrees that nobody agreeing is going to get very ugly. It can stay right there.

Because it's not awesome to get a text from your wife that the internet dropped on all devices while 5 kids were on zoom class meetings and she was in the middle of a critical project for work. :phair:

Yeaaaah, already dealt with an issue like that. Work gave her a Pixelbook to use instead of a Windows machine and there's a weird bug with those that if you undock your computer and then redock, you get zero WiFi. Found out that I have to turn off the extender, so she can hit the router, then turn back on the extender where she connects.

That was a joyful "I have 5 minutes until my meeting with the VP and I'm not using my phone for a hotspot!" moment.

That's some solid shit right there. Nighthawk was always the "nothing to fix here" router when I was doing cable installations and a 3.1 modem is a massive upgrade over 3.0. well, 3 years ago it was. I'm out of that business so I'm not up to date.

Anyway, killer set up 3 years ago

Yeah, it's amazing the stuff I learned just looking up new WiFi specs and Docsis stuff. I was worried about upping my bandwidth coming into the house, because at our old place Comcast said it would require some new cable installation. I knew that shit wasn't fiber and I wasn't about to spend a few k on an install.

From what you remember, is fiber still the holy grail for home use speeds?

I'm getting 170 down and 20 up on my Spectrum cable connection right now (middle of the day with plenty of schoolkids and working from home families surrounding us)

It's been working really well with all four of us home for the last 5 months, streaming the fuck out of everything on multiple devices pretty much all day long. <knocks wood>

Unfortunately, AT&T contracted with my city to monopolize fiber installations, so, no Google, no Fios  - and their alternative product (Uverse) sucks my dogs dick. Cable is about my only option - but I'm ok with that for now.

Just put in improved WiFi - bought a set of AmpliFi (Ubiquity) router + mesh pair, and now I have a wired backhaul into my studio - totally seamless wireless throughout my entire property, and no more loss of signal in my heavily-attenuated studio :rawk:

Mesh is the keyword.

Plus I have an app on my phone that’ll let me instantly shut down access on any connected device. Even when I’m not home.

This is the way.

I'm a nerd. I freely admit it. Several years ago, I wired my house for data/voice and audio/video. I have 22 data drops; 8 near the recording desk and 8 behind the A/V rack. The rest are scattered throughout. I have an HDMI feed from the A/V rack to the kitchen for "zone 2" audio/video and several CATV drops elsewhere. Everything home runs to a 12U enclosed Hubbell wall rack in the garage where I have a 24-port patch panel, 24-port gig switch, 110 punch-downs (voice), A/V splitters and a UPS. Everything in the house that is relatively stationary is hard-wired and the wireless is mainly used for phones. Having said that, the wireless router (Comcast) has been a bit flaky. It's time to call them, argue my bill lower and refresh the gear. I get a solid 300+ Mbps downstream, so that's reasonable (and it's really my only choice), but the wireless has been noticeably degrading. This thread is the impetus to sit on the phone for two hours and argue with a first-level Comcast support/sales moron

That's the simplified setup  About a year ago, I pulled all of my Cisco gear (switch, firewall, VOIP router) and canned the VLAN configuration for a simple, unmanaged switch and DHCP on the Comcast router. I enjoy networking, but there was no way the G/F would be able to fix it if something went wrong. Now, instead of "telnet to 10.0.0.2, see if you can ping 10.0.0.1 and then check the DHCP scope on VLAN_01, then..." it's "See the red switch? Turn it off, wait 5 seconds, turn it on and then see if Pinterest comes back"

I don't get that decision. They sent a questionnaire to us IT folks before building our new building, asking if Wi-Fi only would be an option. Hell, no... The source files for the engineering apps I support are anywhere from 4GB to 12GB each. I have to push 60GB to a machine for a typical app rollout. Wi-Fi is good, but it's 10x slower than our desktop Gig links (and it's a shared medium). Not to mention that the download from the PLM system to a client to open a typical assembly is 2GB - and that happens all day, every day. I pushed for 10G links to the design and analysis machines, but the per port switch costs are just stoopidly expensive...
