I am all set as far as knowing what I need for mesh heads and triggers. What I am struggling with is whether or not I need a module and does that have to have a MIDI output(I have SD3)?

As for the drums, I have a sweet 1989 Yamaha Power Tour Custom kit.

Anyway, how does this all work?

Drum sizes are....

10" snare.
12"&13" toms.
16" floor toms.
22" kick drum.

Modules are for sound generation. You will be doing that with the SD3 so no. You just need a trigger interface like this:

You can either use the MIDI out or the USB out. I prefer the MIDI out because it will have no latency, but you can maybe get away with the USB out if your computer is fast enough.

Ok, that's what I have been looking for. In fact I was looking at their triggers last night. As far as my interface goes, the ID22 does not have MIDI. But, I still have my EMU0404 that does have it. That said, I am headed towards a RME Fireface800 in the future. Which, even as dated as it is will be more interfacevthan I ever need.

I was also pricing those Zildjans with all the holes in them. I didn't know you can set those up with triggers too. This is all crazy exciting. If I can hit my kit everyday, I will be stoked.

Fortunately it has 10 1/4 in. TRS inputs so my DIY/roland Hybrid electronic drum set is hooked
into Superior Drummer. No Mic'ing of drums or cymbals! You have it all right there. Get this if you use an electronic drum set and then get Superior Drummer or BFD3 or one of the other drum software. All you do is connect it via USB from the trigger i/o to your computer and it shows up and works. I love it. Oh and get roland TRS cables. I find those work the best. Quality is important. I have 1 snare, 1 kick, 1 crash, 1 hi-hat, 4 toms, 2 rides = totaling 10 trigger inputs which is perfect for my needs

yeah it's pretty simple. And +1 on getting the Roland cables.

I'm going to be all over this once my knee is fixed.

While everything said here is correct, I would still opt for a used module. Unless you are 100% sure you can trigger sd3 with your setup with no latency.

I have an old Roland td6, can be had used for $225-250 and I just monitor from the sounds on that and send midi into my computer which I assign the drum sampler to playback what I played. A midi interface is all you need, but I know for the music I play, it wasn’t always able to keep up at the lowest latency, which you will have to use to have sounds that correspond to when you hit.

You and I are on very similar war paths lately.

I never had a problem with latency using a MIDI cable. USB, yes.

But if there's anyone who can out speed any latency, it's you lol

Yeah, I guess I’m referring to my old system. I thought I tried it with my current system which has much more ram.

It will work but it is pretty taxing to trigger a full sample kit with lowest latency.

PLus, I know the samples with the old modules are nowhere near the realism out there today, there still is sumthin fun messing around with those sounds. They do sound good even tho they sound less realistic. Aaannyway, just my suggestion since I do have a mesh kit I triggered for years.

I'm upgrading my PC right now in part for better latency with edrums. I have a Roland TD-10 with mesh heads. Super fun to play with, but getting the sounds from SD2 with low latency is difficult on my old computer. The TD10 has MIDI out, but then I have to go through an interface to convert from MIDI to firewire.

Mesh heads are awesome and if your computer and interface are up to it you should be good to go with a trigger interface. A couple of other things to keep in mind, cymbals and hi-hat suck compared to the real thing, and you won't be completely silent. WAY quieter than acoustic drums but whacking away on mesh and rubber with drum sticks is still loud. The kick pedal will vibrate through the floor so if you have neighbors below you something to keep in mind.

Shit the prices on those triggered “silent” cymbals has come WAY down since that kinda thing was first introduced. They were like $300 PER cymbal the first time I came across those

Pretty it’s this. This is what looked to be on the cymbals I tried years ago.. so basically at $100 per cymbal trigger and you are adding up $ pretty quick

But if I remember correctly it needs it’s OWN sound module. Or whatever it’s called. It didn’t work with a standard module. I guess this isn’t technically a trigger, but a pickup.

Yeah, I was just figuring the Gen16 stuff out. It's pricey, but, it definitely looks like the best option.

You can make your own triggers with piezos. Pretty cheap to do. I made a DIY mesh drum years ago and it actually worked very well. I never made my own cymblas, but I think you would just glue a piezo to the bottom of the cymbal somewhere, and then solder the 2 wires on the piezo to a coax cable and TS plug. I'll see if I can find the website/forum I used back in the day.

The triggers are surprisingly simple. The trick is conditioning the signal from the piezos, which is what the module or trigger interface and drum VST does.
