Ac hum and signal loss

I was reading an old shure document and found data showing the amount of ac hum increases with mic cable length. As well it showed a measurable loss of signal at cables around 25 ft. So it should be preferable to use a short mic cable into a mic-preamp that is near to the subject. Anyone prefer this method?

You don't want things too close too each other to avoid feedback. Like the mic being too close to a speaker. Or even the mic being too close to the computer, if your interfacing.I just hook up and move around. When I record guitar, mic on one end of room and computer and monitors on the other. I also can not sit in front of the computer with my guitar while recording. Not with high gain settings
